Help Capturing

Post by CortCDR »

I am very new at this but I am very computer literate. I own a JVC Mini DV GR-D72U. I have a new Gateway computer. Here's the deal. I purchased DVD MovieFactory 5 and have a IEEE 1394. When I go to capture the video from the tapes in my camcorder it will work for a few minutes and then says "Capture Failed, The file may be corrupt 13011:5:2". Please help me. Why can't I capture the video from my camcorder?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

In order to help we need you to want to help yourself too. All we know is the name of your PC, your camcorder and connection and that you have a problem. How do you expect us to help with so little to go by?

I suggest to have a look at this http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8960 for starters and to fill in your system details in your profile.

Another area of interest to us would be your capture settings. Which device control and capture module did you use? What are you capturing to, mpeg or DV-AVI? If DV, type 1 or type 2?

Does your OS recognise the camcorder when you switch it on?

Yes, my OS does recognize my camcorder. I do not know what format it is capturing, as I cannot ever get it to capture. This is exactly what happens - I plus in the camcorder and my computer recognizes it. I go to MF5 and go to Video Disc - New Project. From there I select the Create a Video Disc - DVD. I then select capture from a video device. The source is DV and I use fixed duration (however I have also tried Full DV tape). The default Format is DVD-HQ 4:3 (Dolby Digital). I then select Start Capture. I begin capturing for no longer than 8 seconds and then the error pops up "Capture Failed, The file may be corrupt 13011:5:2".

Let me get this straight, you plug in your camcorder, open a new project with DVD disk properties, select to create a video disk and then you capture?

Something doesn't add up in your work flow. May I recommend a good read of this thread http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27. Even though it is aimed at VideoStudio users, the general work flow should be the same.

no - I'm sorry - I go to Import - Capture from Devices. Then it says Source - DV and I use fixed duration (however I have also tried Full DV tape). The default Format is DVD-HQ 4:3 (Dolby Digital) but I have tried MPEG and AVI. I then select Start Capture. I begin capturing for no longer than 8 seconds and then the error pops up "Capture Failed, The file may be corrupt 13011:5:2".

I have also tried to capture using the ImageMixer software that came with the camcorder and it will not capture the video either.

Since the software that came with your camcorder fails also, I would explore the possibilty of a bad Firewire cable.

You might also try using the free program WinDV: http://windv.mourek.cz/, to see if you can capture with it. If not then I really would suspect something is wrong with your hardware.

I am one step ahead of you and bought another firewire just to ease my mind and still nothing. I just don't know where to start. Thank you for your help.

I know you've tried MPEG and AVI, have you tried DV and Type 1?

Next I would start a process of elimination. I still am believing you have a hardware issue more then a software, since you have tried different programs with the same results.

What about the Firewire port on your computer, is it a Firewire card or built in ? Have you tried making sure all background apps are shutdown? Do you have access to another computer? If so you might try installing DMF5 on it, and see if you can capture. If not, then it may be a problem with the camera itself..

I do not see on DMF5 where I can select the DV and Type 1 formats. i have 3 firewire ports on my computer and have tried them all. I do have access to another computer however I do not know if it has a firewire port. I will certainly check. Also, I always shut down my apps so that isn't it. I was just finally at a loss and needed to get some outside suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Just because you shut down all app's doesn't mean there is nothing running in the background or hugging resources. Are you connected to the internet while capturing? Do you have applications set to check the internet for upgrades at regular intervalls? Do you have an anti virus program running etc.

How many processes are running (use the TaskManager to find out) when you try to capture?
