Making a DVD from a long analog Video tape
Hello,
I am very sorry if this is a duplicate question, but I could not find any answers after searching the forum. Mostly because I am not familiar with the terminology.
I have an older Sony camera that records the content in analog. I know how to digitize it, and open the resulting file in Ulead VideoStudio 9.
But after a lot of experimenting (the manual does not seem to go anywhere near this issue), I don't know what to do.
The video I am working on now is a tape of my daughter's choir performance. I want the resulting DVD to have a selection on the menu for each individual song, as well as the ability to start playing the first and let it play through.
I tried "cutting" the single long file at the point for each song, and then went to 'share'. I used the auto detect for adding chapter marks, and it worked. But those chapter marks don't show up on the menu.
What am I missing?
Thank you in advance for any help.

You are missing the fact that chapters are created in the "Share >> Create Disc" function in VS9 - not in the editing timeline
After the 'Create Disc' window opens and you have imported your video (in one piece) to the timeline in that window you will see the option to Add/Edit Chapter up the left side of the preview screen - clicking on that will open a window which allows you to select the start points for each chapter.
When you run the video you will first see a menu screen (which you can suppress) with only one thumbnail on it representing your one video - clicking on that will take you to the menu page showing your chapter points.

Creating "Chapters" on the top level menu.
Hello Brian,
And thanks for responding. Yes, I am aware of all you mention. And I guess this is where I am having confusion on terms.
The result of what you describe is a "top level" menu of only one item, and when you click on it, you get a menu containing the "chapters", which are the individual songs.
But how can I get THAT menu as the top level menu? The current top level menu has no value, as there is only one option on it.
Thanks again

You say: "I tried "cutting" the single long file at the point for each song, and then went to 'share'."
But I suspect that the 'share' you went to was not the right one (Share > Create Video File > DVD). And instead, you used Share > Create Disc > DVD. This would then use your entire project in the burning module i.e. treating it as one file, which results in the single and, to you, useless icon in the top layer of the menu.
Instead, just to be sure, I would, in the editing stage and after you have done all the other editing you want, make cuts at the beginning and end of each song using the scissors icon. Then with the video covering an individual song highlighted, I would go to Tools > Save Trimmed Video. Do this for each song. There will then be new icons for each song created in the Library pane.
Note that when you have done all this, your original video is not in fact cut but remains untouched. So you have to delete this from the timeline (though not from the computer until you are sure everything has worked). Then, if all the new individual files are to your satisfaction, close the project. Start a new project, but don't drag anything into the timeline. Instead, go to Share > Create Disc > DVD. Insert each of your new individual files in the burning timeline in the order you want. When you build your menu, this will then give you individual icons for each song in the top layer of the menu.
As a footnote, I would note that in suggesting the above workflow, I am assuming that the captured analogue video is already in DVD-compatible mpeg-2 format. If so, then the workflow I suggested applies. If you have captured in some other format -- ideally DV/AVI -- then, after you have used the scissors and 'Saved Trimmed Video' for each song, delete the existing video from the timeline. Then drag the first new video back into the timeline, and go to Share > Create Video File > DVD, to create a DVD-compatible mpeg-2. You will need to do this for each song. A bit tedious, I know, but at least it will ensure you get an icon for each song in the main level of the menu.
In theory, you could try inserting each song in its original format in the burning timeline, and it might work. But if your computer is not a particularly powerful one, it is imposing a heavy burden on it -- in effect asking the burning module first to convert the original format files into DVD format, then to convert the menus you have built into DVD-ready format, and do the multiplexing of the video and audio, and burning the disc, all on the fly. As I say, this is theoretically possible, but the wide experience on this Board suggests that you should already have produced DVD-compatible mpeg-2s before you even open the burning part of the program.

Hello.
Yes, I do believe that that the format of the digitized video of the whole concert is already to go. It shows up as an mpg file, and does not seem to get re-encoded when I burn a disk. (The audio does).
And I think I tried what you are suggesting:
1. Open a new project. and open the one big concert file. It appears in my lib.
2. In the Edit mode, I drag the clip to the timeline.
3. Using the jogger under the video window for the course location finding, and then the smaller jogger in the timeline for the fine location finding, I find the start of the 2nd song (file begins at the start of the 1st).
4. I use the scissors to cut the file at that point. I now have two items in my time line.
5. I repeat this process for all the songs, ending up with as many items on the timeline as songs.
6. I then highlight/select each item on the time line individually, and use the Clip->Save Trimmed Video to save each one. They appear back on in the lib window.
7. I delete all the clips from the timeline, and the original master clip from the Lib window.
8. Start a new project, without saving old one.
9. With nothing in the timeline, I go to Share->Create Disc
10. A window pops up "Ulead VideoStudio Create Disc" that has a video viewer, and zero clips. I have options to "Add Video", "Add VideStudioProject" and "Import DVD/DVD-VR"
11. I cannot drag the clips from the lib into it, and if I select the add video, it looks for video files on my disk, and the clips in the lib window are not there.
If I close the window, and try to drag the clips from the lib window to the main timeline, I get put back in "Edit" mode, and the clips do show up on the timeline.
But when I then go to Create Disc, those two clips show up as one single video .
Again, I am using Ulead VideoStudio 9, as that was what the store had.
Any other suggestions?
I really am sorry to be such a bother, but it would appear that is a bit more complex than I would have thought.
Thanks again.

Well, it is beginning to look like I can't do what I want to do.
The tutorial deals with making a DVD from several individual video files. I do not have that.
And while I can make chapter marks quite easily, I cannot promote them to the top menu. So very close, but yet still far away.
It appears that I have to Share->Make Video File for each of the songs to get them out on the disk as individual files. Seems quite a bother, but so far the only way I can see how to do it.
So, should I make them DV or DVD files to minimize the work when making the final DVD disc?
Thanks to all for the assistance folk.

If the thumbnails are in your library then the video clips are somewhere on your hard disk , the thumbnails are NOT the video clips - they are just icons with shortcuts to the actual video file - right click over a thumbnail and choose 'properties' to see the path to the actual video file.
