AVI clip too long for MiniDv Tape

Post by middlebury madness »

I have an AVI clip that is 98 minutes long that I want to put from my computer to MiniDv. Problem is that the Max MiniDV tape will only hold 83 minutes. I have tried everything to do this and contacted the Tech dept via email. They said that the file is always recorded from the begining and that it cannot be done otherwise. How am I supposed to save the last 15 min of the clip? OR do they make Master quality MIniDV tapes that are longer that will work in my panasonic camera?

Put your camcorder into LP mode, that will give you 1.5x the recording duration that you get in SP mode.

I would but I am making a master tape for archival purposes and LP is not acceptable. Thank you for the idea

Well then the only other option is to split your video in two in VideoStudio and make two seperate .avi files and save them to two seperate tapes.

Thank you, I was afraid that that was what I would have to do, was hoping I could avoid that additional step . Well it was worth asking...

LP does nothing to degrade the quality of the recording, all it does it increase the odds of getting dropouts.

However, if you use Master Quality tapes, the odds of dropouts are slim. Make two copies, and you should be safe (you should have two anyway).

Although it does nothing to degrade quiality, for a master it may be a problem in that LP reorded tapes rarely work on anything other than the camcorder which recorded it, for this reason I'd go with Brian's suggestion of two SP tapes.
