Work flow and VS10

Post by jcherin »

Hi all,

I am looking for information before I purchase VS10. I am a 30 year editor and I am a trainer (so I do understand interfaces and software) -- I have used lots of PC based products (ALL the bigger names)...but what I am looking for is specific to a current need and workflow.

I oversee production at a church and here is what I do...we record our 90 minute services to DVD at 2 hour speed. I then need to 'rip' the video and audio so that I can edit clips or shows. Then it is burned to DVD.

I have used Pinnacle Studio for lots of years and have trained staff on it....BUT Pinnacle CANNOT rip video and maintain audio sync. Obviously, that is a huge problem. I have been using a different program to rip (which does maintain audio sync) but that file isn't compatable with Pinnacle (mpeg II, 720x480, 48k audio) and the video editor in that package is very clunky.

Quality is important...and so is speed...but especially ease of use. Stability is an issue that would be a HUGE plus! (not to pick on Pinnacle but their product hasn't been stable...though I have been very loyal...sigh)

So the time has come to change -- across all our systems (7 on campus). So you can see this is huge issue for me....

Looking at the workflow I have laid out, how would VS10 do? What are the great points...and the weaknesses? Do you rip DVD's and maintain audio sync? And then edit it and burn DVD's?

We do lots of other stuff too but if it works for this, it will be fine for everything else.

Finally, how has support been? A forum like this is a huge plus, but do your calls and emails get timely replies?

Thanks in advance for your input...I need it!

Welcome to our forum. You have raised a large number of points.
I would suggest you start with this article (parts of it still under construction)
From camcorder to DVD with videoStudio

Also worth a look would be our
Frequently Asked questions

As for how quickly that Ulead Tech support reply. I can only speak from my own experience. Please view:

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I had actually spent nearly a week searching the forum and the Ulead website before asking. I liked everything I saw but the questions that I asked were either regarding specific tasks or other information that I didn't find answers to.

As you can tell, once I choose a software package I have my work cut out for me as 10-15+ people will need to be trained in a relatively short time.

The ripping of the DVD in a reasonable amount of time while maintaining video/audio sync is clearly a critical factor in my decision although I am looking at all aspects from capture to DVD creation.

Just as the fact that I have stuck with Pinnacle for many years - even with it's shortcomings - I expect that I will stick with the next package.

My history is that besides being a producer/director/editor since the early 70's, I was one of two world-class trainers for the Pinnacle Alladin DVE/switcher and was a demo artist and trainer on Pinnacle products for over 10 years as a contractor. I also worked on most all of Pinnacle's other broadcast hardware and software until just a few years ago.

I still personally make use of Avid Liquid software but it is not the best (or friendliest) for the needs that I mentioned.

I first 'discovered' Ulead in the MediaStudio5 days when I was approached to demo it. I loved a lot of what it offered -- especially the painting on video features -- but at the time I made a decision to stick with Pinnacle products since they were a bit more 'mature' (I also worked with FAST, Matrox, Adobe, Inscriber and JVC products for demo and training). Over all these years since then, I have actually had a 'softspot' for Ulead and have continuously watched what they were up to.

This is first opportunity I have had to make a major move toward Ulead and I am very excited... but I am also doing my 'due diligence'!

I look forward to discovering all the creative tools that Ulead has built into their products and uncovering tips and tricks (and support!) through this forum.

I just want to say thank you for all the time and effort and great responses that you have given to this forum. I know how much goes into it. I have already learned a lot from you and everyone!

Is there any possibility you could change your source video? The fact that you need to "rip" from DVD as your source may be the root of your problem.

The original source material is dvd-r recorded by stand alone DVD recorders in the SP (2 hr) mode.

My quest is for the right combination of importing  stability, quality, editing and UI. I will try the trial version and import the video...

...and I will let you know what I find.

If the trial doesn't work for you I would suggest an editor that specializes in MPEG editing. Although I have never used it, Womble seems to be the favorite in this regard.
