10+ trial - Video steps or jumps when there is movement

Post by bb193 »

Now VideoStudio 10+ supports the DVR-MS files produced by MS Media Center Edition (MCE), there has been much discussion on the MCE fora on VideoStudio 10 and whether it is the 'best' program for editing video out and burning to DVDs. So far, people are still having problems and the jury is still out.

The trial works fine for me in the UK, producing DVDs from PAL DVB-T recordings. Nice program and I'm really tempted to buy (I have only 6 days of the trial left)..... except......

When I produced a DVD of a 45 minute program I noticed that when there was movement in the video (not fast or much, just things like a close-up of someone speaking) the video seemed to step or jump. The audio was fine and stayed in synch. It just looked like the video would replace a fraction of a second of video with a still, and then play a bit more video then have a still again.

I'm really not being terribly picky here - it was very, very noticeable, annoying and unacceptable.

Has anyone else had this, or got any ideas how I might be able to fix it?

Ahhh - maybe I should try the recommended workflow? I was just burning the file straight after editing, and I have seen some people saying that isn't good.

The product seems to lead you through a workflow - I wonder why it is so easy and intuitive to do the wrong thing?

There's the rub -- and it has been the nub of a sometimes heated debate since I started using Video Studio with version 7 more than 4 years ago. In fact, there are people out there who follow what they regard as a logical work flow: capture, do their edits and go straight to burn a disc from the project. And it works for them -- at least most of the time. But there are other people out there -- and they are not just a few -- who find that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't; or sometimes is never works at all. Now I have said many times, this Board does not set out to be a dictatorship: if something works for you, go ahead and do it. But there is considerable experience over the years here that suggests that the preceding work flow may cause difficulties, particularly for people with not particularly powerful computers. But even that is perhaps an over simplification.

In any case, the recommended procedures reflect a workflow which is far less likely to cause difficulties even if, to some, it may not seem intuitively correct. But if you think about it, you are only at most losing a few seconds of time by following the recommended workflow -- the time it takes to close your project and go to Share > Create Video File. Even if you jump straight to Share > Create Disc, the computer will usually have to convert the project to make it DVD compatible, and that will take the same time regardless. But it will also have to multiplex and burn, and all on the fly. Less powerful computers simply can't keep up with the demand thus placed on them. It is far easier on them if they are only tasked to do individual steps, one at a time, rather than all together. First capture. Second, edit. Third, produce a DVD compatible file. Fourth, burn the file. And most people find that step 3 is the important one.

It just seems odd that, as this seems to be a problem that has been around in many previous versions, that 10+ has not either fixed the problem or fixed the workflow so people can't get it wrong.

Heh, ho, I'll give it a try. However, my trial period is running out, so I may not be able to prove it out before that runs out. I guess there is no way of extending the trial for (say) another 10 days or so?

Incidentally, if I have to produce a video file first and then burn to DVD second, I wonder at what stage I should compress the file?

If I record a 2 hour file using MS MCE and then cut out the adverts, it normally comes down to about 1 hour 40. Anything more than about 1 hour 20 seems to need to be compressed. So do I compress when I create the file, or when I burn to DVD?

And if I'm trying to produce a 1 hour 40 DVD like this, any idea approximately how long I should expect each stage and the whole process to take?

Cheers

Eric
