Any software rendering faster than Video Studio stuff?

Post by Banji Abereoje »

Hi,

I will appreciate if I could get a hint of any other editing software that renders faster than video studio.

I do use VS8 for my editing but I think it takes unnecessary long time to render.

Any hint will be highly appreciated.

Are you using 'Smart Render' ? I don't think Smart render worked very well according to forum reports relating to Version 8 but appears OK with Versions 9 & 10.

Smart Render means that the video is only rendered where alterations have been made such as new/altered sound effects, titles, transitions, filters and so on.

How long do you expect a full render to take?
Think of a piece of video this way:
(Using the PAL system as an example)

A video comprises of 25 frames per second - however the frame is made up of two fields upper field and lower field. 25 x 2 = 50.
This means there are 50 pictures for every second.
1 minute = 50 x 60 = 3000 pictures per minute.
1 hour = 3000 x 60 = 180000 pictures per hour.

Now if your video was in DV (AVI) format it has to be converted into MPEG2 format so that you can create the DVD - VOB files.

Think of each DV picture as you would a bitmap (bmp) and each one has to be downgraded into a JPG.

That's going to take a long time.

How long is it taking?

What format are you rendering from?

What format are you rendering to?

How long are your video files? (time?)

How big are your video files? (GB)

If it's taking many hours, you are probably converting from DivX or Xvid. In that case, there may be programs that can convert faster.

BA, some additional information about your workflow and what you are doing would be helpful.

But yes, there are tools that encode video faster than Videostudio. The fastest encoding currently available to consumers (albeit with fairly little control over the encoding parameters) is ATI's GPU-accelerated video encoding:

Adobe intends to support GPU-accelerated video encoding in Premiere Pro, as does Sony in Vegas.

Looking at your computer set-up, I would say it would take probably around 3.5 to 4 hours (or possibly even more) to render one hour of video. It is not just the program you use, but also your computer resources which will affect render times. If you look at my system specs, you will perhaps be able to make a comparison. With my computer, it takes usually around 1.25 hours to render 1 hour of video (with Smart Render off). Now that may be considered by some people also to be a long time. But I accept it and simply go read a book or out shopping while it is happening.
