titles in the style of a typewriter?

Post by cliveports »

Here's a challenge for you all :) I'd like to put a title at the bottom of my screen that looks like its being produced on a typewriter (I'm sure there must be an effect that'll do this?) so I'm guessing thats the relatively easy bit (well not for a newbie like me!) but here's the biggger challenge, I'd like to add audio thats sounds like the clatter a typewrite produces and sync it to the letters appearing on the screen (any UK guys out there will remember the old teletypwriter on Saturday afternoon sports programmes!!). Thanks!!

Hi Clive

Grandstand I believe was the program, with the tickertape scrolling the soccer results across the bottom of the screen.

As you said the text is easy to produce, Have a look at the link from Thoff re tickertape.
Use a text backdrop to produce the coloured tape.

Thanks to Thoff

The audio is a different problem.
It may be easier to create your own sound, if you had an old typewriter, and knew someone that can type.
That way the sound would be in sync’

Ah Grandstand it was! Many thanks for replying, I had a look at the example and its not quite what I'm looking for, Thoff's flies from R to L and moves off the screen. I want the letters to appear from L to R but build the word up (just like a typewriter) and stay on Screen, if that makes sense. As for the audio I think the easiest way would be to dub the sounds manually as the letters appear (once I've worked how to do that!!) so what I thought was the easy and hard challenges are the other way round!!!

Add an 'Old Typewriter' font to the word processor on your system so that Video studio can see it and then type the text you want using character by character animation. Then add a typewriter audio effect from one of the many audio FX CDs available.

Thanks Terry, the font is a good idea, as for the character by character animation, I assume this is a preset in VS10+? The audio needs to match each letter as it appears so I dont think a wave file will help?

For the text animation, select the Fade, 2nd preset. It animates the text appearing on the screen by character, which resembles typing. You need to press the TT and set it to User Defined. Now drag the Pause Duration handle to the far right.

Do you have any Flash authoring program? Swishmax has a couple of great typing effects. The text could be done in a Flash authoring program then brought into VS as a SWF...

Here's just the SWF I created in about 10 mins..

Thanks Chaps! And thanks for the Swish example!! I now have an old typrwriter font and have used the "Fade, 2nd preset" selecting TT > character > Userdefined (cant see the Pause Duration Handle though).

WRT Flash authoring I have Cool3d3,5 (NOT PS) that I belive can creat flash files so may be able to do it in that? Not too experienced in C3D, only had it a week!!

Now how the heck to I get that audio.........????? Unless I just find a sound file that has the sound of typing and dont worry too much about character syncing?

All you need do is get an audio sample of the typing (download) and create an audio file (by trimming) a small section of that file; ie one hit of a key. You can then take that file and sync it up numerous times to match the character animation. Video Studio will let you do this with frame accuracy.

Hi
Another idea
Using XP there is an on screen keyboard that can produce a key click sound.

By setting your recording options to Stereo Mixer you should be able to use the keyboard, the Record Voice option will save the sound.
