Reading the suggestions already given, couple of things to try to confirm/disprove these suggestions as posible causes.
1. Overheating. Remove the Computers case to allow more air to circulate, also check the fans for clogging up and see if they are spinning OK.
2. Regarding turning off unecessary processes please view this post:
Create a Video Editing Profile
If these steps do not cure the problem at least we have eliminated these as causes and can start looking elsewhere.

You've probably already had more expert help than this suggestion but I think worth adding anyway.....
Do a few simple tests, for example --
1) Load a really smally AVI clip (1min or so) and render this
2) Do the same thing with a couple of different formats, if possible
Do not have any transitions/overlays'/audio....
If 1) and 2) do work, then add in transitions/overlays/audio in steps and repeat the process of rendering....
It's not science and will take a little time but may help to pin-point wha's causing your issues.
All the best,
Brian

Thanks Brian..... I am just going through the "create profile' thing, but I will give your suggestion a go....
Steve, as mentioned, I am creating a video editing profile....when I try to edit the start up menu/registry, it appears that the start up folder is empty?? Is this normal?
Also, now I have a new profile, I have lost all my video clips/projects when I open VS10+ in my new account........
Thanks

If you've done the video editing profile correctly then the startup menu
and registry run sections will be empty unless you have deliberately kept something there.
The 'missing' video clips/projects aren't missing they are in your normal user account.
I'm at work now but from memory its something like
c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ulead Systems\VideoStudio\<Product Version>
Think of it this way.... without a video editing profile but with each member of your family having their own XP user account.
Each member of your family can have their own desktop with their own desktop wallpaper, shortcut icons etc.
It's the same with the programs used by your family members.
If 'Fred' opens Microsoft WORD it lists Freds credentials and a list of Freds most recently opened documents. Now if 'Jean' does the same you get Jeans credentials and a list of her most recently opened documents.
Same goes for VideoStudio.

Well the plot thickens.... I have good news, and bad.....the good news is that I have created a video file of my project.... Creating a new 'video editing' profile worked a treat............thanks Steve!
The bad news is that when I try to create a disc (yes, I have started a new project with noting in the timeline, and settings exactly the same as my video file, I get the 'project will take some time to render' message.... I have gone back and double checked my settings to no avail....VS 9 is looking better each day........
PS. Properties are:
NTSC DVD
Mpeg 2, Lower field first
Data rate: 7456 kbps
Dolby Digital audio/ 256kbps

LPCM is to audio what uncompressed AVI is to Video - large in file size and best quality. Dolby can now be considered universal and is a much smaller file size. It is so well reknown that I do not have to comment upon its quality.
The smaller audio file size (Dolby) means that there is more space on the DVD for either - more video, or higher quality video.

After having no problems at all with VS9, including doing some of the things members recommend against, I encountered exactly this problem with a 35 minute render with VS10+.
I was using some of the new filters in VS10 and thought that might be the problem. However rather than go back and change them all I cut the video in half as suggested earlier in this post. Both halves rendered OK with no problems.
I will also try the editing profile suggested earlier and see how that goes. I don't normally have any problems except that if I do a lot of editing in one go, ie 2-3 hours on the PC, it starts to crash. Restarting VS usually fixes this.
Thanks
Peter

I am having the exact same problem and I can only put it down to the fact that I am using up to 40 different transitions throughout the project.
I did a similar project but used the same single transition all the way through - this project rendered perfectly and very quickly as all files were mpg files.
The project that is freezing uses all different transitions and I am starting to think that VideoStudio doesn't like some of them!
The new high end PC that I am using is brand new and only has Windows XP Pro SP2 and Video Studio 10 + installed on it!
To get a finished product I have had to divide the project into 3 separate mpg files and then combine them as mpg files at the Create Disk stage.
