Computer freezing at 99% rendered

Post by Larry Dickman. »

I have created my video following the 'sticky' procedure closely, but at the share/create video file stage, I get to 99% rendered the VS10+ locks up??? It appears that although the program states 99% rendered, this does not appear to be the case, as the preview window has frozen at approx. 80%??
Any help would be appreciated.

Videostudio 10+

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Are you rendering using 'same as project properties' or are you converting another format to MPEG2 during Render? Also, any chance that your processor is overheating?

Thanks for the prompt response TDK1044.....

The steps I use to render are:

Share-----Create Video------'same as first clip'.

Processor overheating is possible, but for it to happen twice at the same point I am leaning to user error :)

Is your first clip an MPEG2 clip, Larry? How many clips are there and are they all MPEG2? I'm trying to get a sense of how hard your system is having to work in order to render your project. If, for example, all your clips are MPEG2 with a few transitions, then by using the 'smart render' option the process of rendering your project to one MPEG2 file would be very quick and overheating wouldn't be an issue. If however, you are converting AVI files to MPEG2, then that would require a lot more hard work for your system to do and your processor speed and RAM would be an issue.

The first clip is Mpeg2 as are the rest, the exception being some JPEGS...
The project is about 50 min in length with approx. 15 transitions and quite a few overlays, both video track and audio.......

My computer specs are as follows:

XP Home SP2
AMD Athlon XP2600+
1.92 GHz 512MB Ram
120G HD

As a workaround, Larry, I'd split the project into two halves and render both halves separately. Then at the burn stage, using the 'add media' option, add both of your rendered project files and burn to DVD.

One final thought, Larry. Disable all unnecessary background programs prior to rendering. Running programs like Virus Scan or Screensaver in the background could also cause these kinds of issues.

This is driving me nuts!
I just halved the length of my project.....freezes at 99%

Re-installed VS10+, tried to render my project again, freezes at 99%.

I only have the trial version, having used VS 9 for some time with no issues....... don't think I will be shelling out for version 10 some how.

I don't have any virus programs, screensavers etc running in the background, the computer I use VS10+ is not connected to the net, it is dedicated to video/audio editting.

In the interests of excluding possible factors, can you re-do one of your projects, but change the audio to either LPCM or mpeg audio? At least that way, we will know whether to exclude the audio format as a possible culprit.

If you have the interest and the time, as a separate test you might also want to lower the Dolby data rate to a lower setting than 256 kbps. I in fact use that data rate with no problem. But I recall last year a couple of people had trouble like yours and they lowered the Dolby data rate. It appeared to have worked.

Tried again and changed the pref. to LPCM.......froze at 99%!

The only other thing that may be a factor is that although it freezes at 99%, according to the preview window that allows you to monitor the picture as it is being rendered, it appears that the rendering has only completed about 35 minutes of a total project length of 48 minutes, which is not 99% :?

I'm wondering whether one of your files may be corrupt. Try capturing the footage that represents minutes 30 to 40 of your project again, and use this new file instead of the existing one and see what happens.

TDK1044, I think I can rule this out, as I only tried to render the first twenty minutes of my project ie I deleted the other 28 minutes (including the portion where the render was freezing)........still froze at the 99% mark...

Thanks again, there are some fine/helpful people on here.

Ok at this point Larry I would really start getting back to basic basics.
Make sure that you have all background and unnecessary processes shut down before you try to render. This includes screensavers, anti-virus etc EVERYTHING you can lay your hands on! Do a defrag. Make sure you have about three times the real estate of your project in the form of contiguous space on the hard drive. Eg 4gig project, have about 12gig available for VS to throw stuff all over the place!! As a mattewr of interest how much FREE space do you have on the 120gig hard drive?
