Best Resolution/Video Capture

Post by brucefl »

I am looking to purchase something new for video capture. I have an intel cam(CS430), which I can plug my vcr into to record to VS9 (maybe VS10)
I am not sure if the resolution is as good as it can be. What should the maximum resolution be for recording. I want the best clearity I can get for going from Tape to recording on DVD then showing it on TV. I want as best as I can get, without going overboard. I think right now the camera can accept 640, though I may have to go back and check, could be 320.
Any suggestions would be appreciated,
thanks

There are a lot of potential answers to the question. For analogue capture, I use the ADS DVD XPRESS DX2 (about $80). This device does all the MPEG encoding within the box and therefore takes a lot of the work off the PC. It transfers great quality video and sound using DVD NTSC MPEG2 720 X 480 (or the PAL equivelent) I have captured, edited and burnt in Video Studio using these settings with no problems. Fans of the AVI format will offer a different capture path suggestion to you. In the end, it's a judgement call. There are some good people on this forum, and I suspect you'll get a lot of suggestions. Go with your instinct.

Get a camcorder that shoots 720v480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) because that is the best resolution that you can put on a DVD. See http://www.camcorderinfo.com for a wide range of excellent camcorder reviews.
