Custom disc templates causing truncated .mpg clips in mf5

Post by tommoynihan »

I've just upgraded to MF5, but I've found that the custom disc templates do not work correctly, which is a very important feature to me, and which I used extensively on MF3.

When I create a custom disc template (DV AVI to DVD PAL), and then try and use the template on a test DV AVI file with 871 frames, it seems to work, but the .mpg file it produces has up to 22 frames missing from the end of the clip. This seems to happen mainly when I adjust the audio options. Very few audio combinations work, most lose frames off the end of the clip.

This happens whether I export the clip, or actually produce a DVD and examine the VOB file in to video_ts folder.

The 2 base settings for the tests were - PAL 720x576 4:3 90% quality VBR 6000 kbps or PAL720x576 4:3 100% quality CBR 7800 kbps

The following combinations all lose frames at the end of the clip :

MPEG audio 160, 192, 224, 256, 320, 384 kbps
Dolby digital 160, 192, 224, 320, 384 kbs

The only settings that didn't lose frames are :

Dolby digital 256 kbps
LPCM

I never had any similar problem with MF3.

This is obviously just one test clip, so I can't trust it at the moment to put any proper work together.

Maybe some wouldn't miss the frames, but anyone who cares about what they produce would. The concern is that unless you were very sharp eyed, or very cautious (like myself), you might not notice they were missing till some later date.

It may end up being much worse with big AVIs, or cumulatively worse if you lose the ends from lots of converted AVI clips

Has anyone else seen this ?

Have you had this problem with just one video file (possibly corrupted)
or more than one video file?

I've tried it on more than one video file. All have been short clips, just for practical reasons. All have the same problem.

The only way I've found to make it work (so far) is to start a new project, go into mpeg settings, choose one of the Ulead standard settings (E.g. HQ DVD PAL), save and come out of mpeg settings, then go back into mpeg settings, edit the settings to my requirements, and then come out and load up the AVIs and carry on with the DVD. This sometimes works. but is obviously useless, unless I'm prepared to count the number of frames in each AVI and then count the number of frames in each mpeg clip that have been created.

I raised this with Ulead on the same day I put this question on the forum, but I have had no response yet.
