new project

Post by bbxrider »

so i created project, captured about 6 clips from my camcorder, saveed them all as separate vcd's, closed video studio. now want to start a new project with new clips, but after opening vstudio all the previous clips and vcd's are showing, even when i specify new project, all the previous clips and vcd's from the previous project are there?? it seems the only option i have is to keep them in my new project or delete them completely????
can't figure out what i'm missing here to get clean slate to start with without deleting my previous stuff?

When you go "File >> New Project" does that not automatically empty the timeline for you ???

No, No, No. - the gallery as you call it (library to the rest of us ) is just that - a library holding clips for possible future use in any new projects - if it is not in the timeline then it is NOT in your new project.

There is a library manager which allows you to create new libraries and dedicate each one to a new project if you want to work that way - many of us do as it keeps things tidier and is easier to control, then your clips will be organised in a way you will be able to find them again.

Alternatively just delete the thumbnails from the library - this will not delete the original video file - you can easily import them to the library again if you want to use them again in the future.

I have described how to tweak the library manager in this tutorial:

gallery/library/clip management

Post by bbxrider »

thanks for your help
i'm creating libraries.....
although my procedure seems awkward
1. open a library
1.1 record a clip
2. make a ntsc vcd of the clip, just so i can give it a meaningful name
3. delete the original clip, thumb nail and video, keep answering all the relinking questions

seems like a lot of work just to rename the original captured clip with a meaningful name

You do seem to like making life difficult for yourself.

Why are you creating a VCD just to rename a clip ???

There is really no need to change the name of the actual video file - if you capture individual videos to seperate capture folders named (like your libraries) to suit each project you will know that the files in that folder belong to that project - if you really want to you can just change the name under the thumbnail in the library - just click on the thumbnail and after a short pause click on it again (NOT double click) and the text under the thumbnail will be in edit mode so that you can give the thumbnail a meaningful name.

Or if you really want to change the name of your video clip - capture the video, - delete the thumbnail it automatically puts in the library, go to your actual video file and rename it, - re-import the video (with new name) into your library.

thanks very much again, you really understand the application and the questions asked
the thumbnail renaming will save a lot
i'll have to investigate what its doing with all the clips when deleting renaming etc
when you say "delete the thumbnail it automatically puts in the library, go to your actual video file and rename it, "
do you mean the windows file name? and rename it in win explorer?

i'm using version 6, is it worth to upgrade to version 9
i want to be able to edit clips frame by frame and take individual frames and save them as jpegs etc

NO.

Upgrade to Version 10 :D

With older versions (<9 at least), when you deleted a clip from the library you were asked if you wanted to delete the thumbnail and then you were asked if you wanted to delete the file.

I liked that arrangement more than the 10+ behavior. Now, I am asked if I want to delete the thumbnail - and the file is not deleted.

Is there any option or setting that will bring back the old behavior?

You might say, "Go to the working directory... and delete the files with Windows Explorer." That's fine, but I have a little bit of trouble managing a lot of files that have no obvious names. When I am managing several projects at once- it is difficult to keep the disk cleaned up.

Thanks in advance,
Russ

Hold down the SHIFT key when you hit the DEL key -- that will allow you to delete the clip associated with the thumbnail.

Yes - I didn't realise until your last post that you were running such an old version - so when you delete the automatically generated thumbnail (which you do in VideoStudio) just click on it and hit the delete key on your keyboard, READ THE NEXT PROMPTS CAREFULLY - the first will ask if you want to delete the thumbnail - say Yes - the second asks if you want to delete the video file - say NO - then go to Win Explorer/My Computer and actually rename the video clip there - then go back to UVS and import the video again .

You really would find a major improvement if you upgraded to the latest versions - either V10 or V10+ - as a user of version 6 you are entitled to buy at the upgrade price.
