1. I need to make full NTSC sized 29.92fps avi files. The video backgrounds included in the trial (specifically the space one) are pixelated at this resolution. Are the ones in the full version higher res?
2. I have two text objects in my animation and I want to activate a particle effect (fire) on ONE of the only AND at frame 95 (but not before). I can't seem to do this because the software wants to apply the particle effect to ALL text objects from the first frame on.

Here are the answers to your questions.
1) No. The video backgrounds are all low resolution 320x240.
2) Take a look at this old thread. It shows two ways of achieving this and these methods can be applied to all particle effects. I even supplied an animation link.
