Help: Getting rid of "old" .AVI files

Post by TrevorS »

I have imported a number of 90min videos into VS10+ and have been trying to get familiar with VS10+. I use a second drive (D:) for my data. After much "messing about" I found I had 67% of D "used" but the VS10 files only added to about 63GB (30%). In VS10, I deleted all Projects and Libraries but this made little difference to the 67% used and I couldn't reformat D. Windows EXplorer lists no files on D. I have now uninstalled VS10 (and all other Ulead software), but again no change and I cannot reformat. I tried Disk Defragmenter, and it lists 4 files similar to "\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\0000065.AVI" which I can find no way to get rid of.
Can anyone help me out of this mess please?

1) What message do you receive when you try to reformat?
2) What format is the current D drive in?
3) Have you tried formatting in Safe Mode in XP?
4) I assume you have tried the usual 'Empty Recycle Bin' command?

Also, do you have something like Norton AV installed which can have an option to protect the bin, so you have to empty it from Norton.
The NPROTECT bit draws my attention.

Could also try a search for all temp files and delete those.

And while you are at it, try to replace NORTON with something a bit more user friendly. I got rid of it for it's troublesome nature years ago and never looked back.

Thanks guys for your ideas; I think I am a bit dangerous on a PC.
I found that I could force a reformat via Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management, right click on D: and select Format.
Now to re-install VS10 and get on with editing.

Can I ask how else you were trying to reformat the disk? The way you describe is, AFAIK, the normal way to format a disk, not a 'forced' format...

Ken,
I started via Windows Explorer - I right clicked on D: and selected Format - after confirming that I wanted to proceed it gave an error message that seemed to stop me in my tracks. I also looked to see if any running processes/applications may have been accessing the 4 files but nothing was obvious. It was only via Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance etc that I got the Format to run.

Graham,
I have also looked into what you said about Norton Protected Recycle Bin (I did wonder why it was called that instead of just Recycle Bin) and I think this was the problem. Thanks for that; you learn something every day.
