It could be a memory problem, physical as well as virtual.

Since we do not know what your system spec's are or even which version of PI you are using, it is impossible to be more specific.

What is your OS, how much RAM, how many HDD's, size, free space, when defragged last, wher does your swap file reside, where are the PI temp files located, have you limited the use of memory and disc space for PI? etc.

Are you using a True Color Image, nothing less will work? Did you uncheck the Disable Object Pick Mode while Drawing, on the Tool Settings?

When I do the same, with the Text Tool highlighted and before I Edit the Text, I right click on the Text to reveal a menu, and from that menu select Edit Text. The Cursor moves to the beginning of the Text and I can retype new text.

The other method of changing Text is to run the Cursor over the Selected and Highlighted Text, which means the marching ants moving around the text, until the little T shows up in the center of the Cursor. When this occurs, double click on the Text with the T Cursor and you can retype new text. This method is good for correcting individual letters.

How to repro

Post by mculver »

On my system I simply start Iedit, create an empty image (16 color or truecolor), click on the text button in the left-hand toolbar, then click anywhere on the drawing surface. Throws a memory exception right away.

The reported error is "Unhandled exception at 0x016d2560 in Iedit_.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation."

I (obviously) don't have access to debug symbols because I have the retail version of this product; however the stack trace is below. It dies on the POP.

016D254B add byte ptr [ecx],dl
016D254D add byte ptr [eax],al
016D254F add byte ptr [eax],dh
016D2551 add ebp,dword ptr [ebp+1]

If clearing out your Temp folder does not do the trick, then I would say you have a bad install. Somehow the Registry keys are corrupt. Perhaps the anti-virus did a number on your install.

If that is the case uninstalling, deleting the two Ulead Folders and reinstalling with the anti-virus turned off is the only option left.

Reinstall Does Not Help

Post by mculver »

I uninstalled Ulead, as well as all the ancilliary things that came with it. Then I deleted all temp files under "Documents and Settings", as well as files that were left in the "Program Files\Ulead" tree.

Reinstalled just Photoimpact 11 with no patches, no other Ulead goodies of any sort.

Created a new blank file, selected the text tool, then clicked on the drawing surface. Instant application exception....

Microsoft says:
Unhandled Exception Error.
Unable to run Application.

1. Disable the initial Splash screen.
2. Problem: When user clicks on the Application icon to run program, program starts to come up then freezes while loading *d.dll (may also occur shortly thereafter)

3. Resolution: this is the conflict involving your video card, if you go to start/control panels/display then find the setting called hardware acceleration turned that down to none and retry this should allow the Application to run. Most common with users who have Nvidia graphics cards.

4. If the previous does not work then you may have to uninstall your graphics cards drivers and reinstall the correct version. You will also have to reinstall the morst current version of Direct X.

Sounds like this answer is for some other problem. I am able to start the app just fine, and in fact PhotoImpact 11 works just fine for anything other than adding text.

Nonetheless I turned off hardware acceleration in the DirectX applet inside control panel. Same issue remains: when I click on the image after selecting the text tool, the application throws an exception and dies.

Microsoft says a DLL is interfering, and this is a bug in the API, and MS is still investigating. They did not give any other details. The exception error occured under at least one hundred other circumstances.

Looks like you are going to have to go the long route and contact Tech Support.

one solution

Post by robperez »

I was having the same problem - any attempt to enter text killed PI11. I disabled DEP for photo impact and things seemed to get better:

1. My Computer - Properties

2. System Properties. Advanced tab.

3. Performance - Settings button.

4. Performance Options, Data Execution Prevention tab.

5. Second radio button (on for all but what I select).

6. Select PhotoImpact (if this is what the problem was, it should already be on your list, otherwise, you can locate it by browsing).

Hope this helps.
