Windows Video 9

Post by TheDavidFactor »

I just got thrown a curve ball!

Instead of wanting DVDs the customer wan'ts WMV files to put on a web site. I see the option to save as Windows Video 8, but they want Windows Video 9. I've downloaded and installed the codec from Microsoft, but how can I get MSP8 to use it?

Not sure about MSP8, but with MSP7 I wouldn't even bother rendering WMV from within the editor. It has some "issues" regarding custom profiles.

Instead, render out to an appropriate intermediate file (e.g. DV AVI) then use Microsoft's free encoder.

yeah, I concur, there is a app called Windows Media Encoder. I have it on my system, but don't remember how it got there. It might have come with media player 10? But I'm sure it's a freebie from microsoft.
Have fun!

AFAIK, WME is used as part of MSP and is loaded at the same time. The WMV templates in MSP are exactly those ones offered by M$, so it makes no difference whether you do it from within MSP or any other app.

The problem I was referring to is the inability to save bespoke encoding profiles (for example, if 256k, 512k and 1024kbps don't meet your requirements, you need to make your own custom profile).

This may have been addressed in MSP8, but it's there in MSP7.3. I'm sure it's a Ulead issue, too, because Canopus Procoder, which also acts as a front end for the WME encoding engine, seems to be able to save profiles without problem.

Now that I think about it, I should maybe test it a bit further, and see if MSP can pick up a WMP profile created within Procoder or WME itself... Watch this space...

Can't check, as I'm away from home until next week.

It can't. It doesn't pick up the Canopus profiles, but it is better behaved than Procoder insofar as the profiles that you can create in MSP (but not use) are stored in the same directory as the WME defaults. Procoder uses its own directory under "Application data"

Accessing WMV9 and custon profiles

You need to install Windows Media Encoder 9 - do a search on google to get the link. This will load profiles to your program files directory under Windows Media Components. Profiles are in a subdirectory called profiles.

I use streaming video and there is a specific non-standard video format required. I was able to DL a PRX file from the website of the hosting company that had the required profile and it worked fine. Once you install the WME9 files Ulead will give any of the profiles in that folder as an option when you create a wmv file
