Ok to upgrade to MSP 8 with work in progress?

Post by mspears »

I'm currently using MSP 6.5 and want to upgrade to MSP 8. I have a wedding and dance recital in progress. Is it ok to ugrade at this point or is it better to wait until I have no projects in the works? I'd like to go ahead and do it now if possible and take advantage of the current special offer. What do you think?

I would not switch app's during a project. Either finish this one or, if not too much work involved, redo the project with MSP 8.

Hi,

Sure it's ok to upgrade now, and take advantage of the special pricing. However like alot of pros and more experienced have cautioned, I would finish any current projects you are working on in your current version. Then you can start using MSP8 with new projects..

As both versions can co-exist on your computer, finish what you're doing with the old. When you are satisifed that you will no longer need the old one, only then should you uninstall it. This also gives you a chance to familiarise yourself with the new, without burning your boats.

Contrary to common advice in this forum, I upgraded from MSP7 (which remained on my hard drive) to MSP 8 in the middle of a project last fall without any major problems and the project was completed at the end of November in MSP 8. I had a couple of minor issues to work through with positioning items on the timelines to take advantage of the new features (transitions on a single track rather than A/B with a separate transition track), but never looked back once the files were converted.

However, I did make copies of all the project files before importing them into MSP8 as I always like to leave a way to at least get back to where I started.

Once I had a little experience with the new workflow in MSP 8, there was no going back... However, your mileage may vary, and you might want to make sure you back all of your work up first so that you're not totally wiped out if it doesn't work as you think it should.

regards, Al

The biggest but not the only problem would be with titles; they transport badly.

I have to say that despite the many and varied problems I have faced (more local PC than software, I fear), I upgraded from MSP7 - 8 and carried on a project sans problems. The big trouble is you just don't know 'till you do it, so I think Devil's advice to keep the old version alongside is best - unless you are feeling lucky.
Thanks & regards.
