hi ken

sorry - i guess thats the typical newbies mistake - assuming everyone knows what im talking about!

i have updated my profile as best i can - hope it helps.

we bought EasyCAP usb 2.0 video adapter with audio. it comes with a set of leads to connect the vcr to the computer via a usb 2.0 port. we know the leads are correctly connected and the vcr works ok because we get good clear pictures of whatever is coming through the vcr (video or tv program) on the monitor screen of the movie wizard. the video capture device is called Syntec 1160.

the disc that came with it set up video studio 10. i have been trying to use the video wizard. the wizard appears to offer a choice of formats in which to download - mpg, avi, etc, but whatever i select it immediately resets itself to avi.

as all i want to do is copy videos i then click capture video. this causes the view on the monitor to start hiccuping and the sound to start jumping. when the capture is complete i move to the next screen and click render, using all the default options. rendering takes another hour in real time (the movie in question is an hour long).

the result is a raw unrendered file of about 60 gig and a rendered avi movie of about 750 meg. the rendered movie is out of snych, getting worse as it progresses.

playing the unrendered file reveals that it too is oos...

can you suggest anything to help please.

Which Wizard are you using? I suspect, because of the automatic reset to AVI, that it is the DV-to-DVD Wizard. And if so, it is the wrong one. You are not capturing from a DV device (which essentially is a mini DV or digital 8 camera which captures direct via a firewire cable, or a capture device which also uses firewire).

Instead, you should use Movie Wizard. That should allow you to set the capture format to mpeg-2. You do the capture in that format. Then test to see if it is in sync. Then you can render it. Again test for sync. If it is out of sync, then do the render again, but this time untick the Perform SmartRender box by clicking on the Options button when you are asked to give your new rendered file a name.

hi ken

i am using the movie wizard not the dv-dvd one. it still accepts only avi as an input format. by adjusting the various options before capturing (other than avi lol) i can capture a normal looking and sounding video (as it appears on the monitor). i can then render it selecting mpeg2 as the output file. i have tried both checking and not checking smart render. checking smart render produces a slightly better result, but neither is usable.

the best output i have been able to achieve is a raw (urendered) file of about 35.287 gig (53 mins) which plays in wmv and goes progressively further out of synch the longer it plays; a 2.157 gig mpg file that plays the movie in media player classic but is oos all through; and an 86 meg mpg file that plays only the sound track in wmv.

where do i go from here...?

Hi
The strange thing is that you should be able to select a variety of capture formats not just Avi??????????????????
How you access the Movie Wizard changes the views you see.
You can access from the splash screen (three Options) or from the VideoStudio Editor. (Tools---Movie Wizard)
Which one are you using.?

OK
If Movie Wizard¡K¡K¡K.
I would capture to DVD format. ( can you select this from the Format Drop Down Box)
This will use VS standard template compatible Mpeg settings.
Select ¡¥Straight Cut¡¦ for the Theme template option. (nothing added to project.)
Return to the ¡¥Editor¡¦

Then I would check the captured file for audio sync¡¦

Otherwise use the VideoStudio Editor (Best Option as your capture settings are shown in the lower information panel)
Select the Capture Tab (top of window)
Select Capture Video
Select DVD as the capture Format.

Capture the video.
Select Edit tab at the top.
Play the captured video to check audio sync¡¦

Do not re-render the captured video

Did your capture device come with its own capture software? It is advised to use the devices software to do the capturing, then to use VS for the editing.
as all i want to do is copy videos i then click capture video. this causes the view on the monitor to start hiccuping and the sound to start jumping.

This statement, and the fact that your out of sync problem gets progressively worse, could point to dropped frames. If you are using VS to capture turn on the drop frame counter (in Preferences) and recapture.

Have you tried capturing NOT using either wizard? i.e. just opening the main Editor and selecting the Capture tab?

Another thing that puzzled me in your first post was that you say you are using an EasyCap device, but then you say it is something called a Syntec 1160. I have Googled for that but the only reference to something of that name in a video context is this thread! All other references apply to fishing tackle or obviously unrelated company names...

sorry ken - i was imprecise - its a Syntek STK1160.

i just dropped in to thank you all for your kind efforts to help. i have deleted video studio 10. after trying several other sets of capture software i have settled on CyberLink Power Director. CPD produces a perfect mpeg copy of tapes and tv shows from a single screen after a single play of the video. i am now putting the Savoy Operas onto harddrive :D .

incidentally, the STK1160 works just fine with all the other software i tried.

goodbye and thankyou.
