MPEG Video's Imported into DVD Workshop have no audio

Post by Chris_L »

SUBJECT: Videos loaded into DVD Workshop 2 do not have audio.

Nature of the problem:

I am trying out DVD Workshop 2 for DVD creation. I loaded MPG videos (with sound...Dolby DIgital) into the library and started menu creation. No sound is forthcoming. When I look at the audio playlist associated with the video(s), no audio is listed. These videos do have audio and play fine through any number of players. Other DVD creations software titles (e.g., Nero, PowerProducer) work just fine.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
Source files are mpg's generated by Adobe Premiere Elements. Format is Dolby Digital.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
Nothing to speak of here. Audio works fine.

Project Settings

Default

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)

DVD....but I haven't created it yet because there is no audio

PAL or NTSC

NTSC

Error Codes (if any)

None

If the movie is an elementary stream, which consists of one stream of audio and one stream of video then you need to import the audio after you have imported the video.
click on the video in the timline, nearly top left click on the audio tab and import.

Videos loaded into DVD Workshop 2 do not have audio

Thanks for your reply. However...are we talking about the same piece of software? I attempted what you suggested and the ability to import the audio track is not showing.

I do note that the audio properties of all videos on the timeline are:

Dolby Digital Audio
48000 Hz
192 bps

So...the properties of the video show audio content in properties...but it doesn't play..or at least I can't hear it through DVD Workshop (but I can thru everything else so I must have the right codecs loaded).

By the way, these video are mpeg's...as an FYI...exported from Premiere Elements.

Is it possible that this software doesn't support AC3?

I'm having the exact same problem with audio (no audio in mpg).

The mpg files were created by using capture from vhs video using DMF (DVD Movie Factory), and it plays with sound fine in that program but not if I import (or capture) using DWS (DVD WorkShop).

Also, can't capture at all in DWS, as keep getting error: 'Failed in capturing. The created file is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted.' However I get no such error with DMF.

Well as it was in the WS forum, I assumed you were using WS, is this right?
If so we are talking about the same software.

When I make my mpeg's I make an elementary stream from canopus procoder, it gives me a m2v file which is the Mpeg2 video file and a WAV audio file. I bgring these in seperately, then use WS to make my ac-3 audio.

Are your mpeg2 files programme streams, m2p which include the audio?
Perhaps list the settings you used in elements to make your mpeg2 file.

No audio heard in imported or captured files (mpeg2)

Nature of the problem:
I'm having the exact same problem with audio (no audio in mpg).

The mpg2 files were created using capture from vhs video using Medion USB2.0 Audio/Video Grabber Kit (MD90041) and DMF (DVD Movie Factory), and it plays with sound fine in DMF but not if I import into DWS (DVD WorkShop).

When I look at the audio playlist associated with the video(s), no audio is listed either.
These videos do have audio and play fine through any number of players too.
Other DVD creations software titles (e.g. MyDVD, VideoWorks, DMF) work just fine too.

Also, can't capture at all in DWS, as keep getting error: 'Failed in capturing. The created file is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted.' However I get no such error with DMF.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):
Source files are mpg's generated by DMF with settings as follows
Source: Analog TV, Format: DVD-HQ 4:3 (Dolby Digital), Input source: Composite, TV system: PAL_B, Audio device: Realtek AC97 Audio, Input source: CD Player, Disc type: DVD.
Media clip properties:
Video type: MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First, Audio Type: Dolby Digital Audio, Attributes: 48000Hz, Layer: None, Bitrate: 256kbps (any size, small or large).

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
In DMF: Capture using Medion USB2.0 Audio/Video Grabber Kit (MD90041) connected to VHS Video Player. Audio works fine.
In DWS: can't even capture due to error explained above (Source: MD90041 Audio/Video Grabber, Format: DVD, Capture audio is ticked, Audio input source: tried both options Realtek AC97 and USB EMP Audio Device).
IF import mpg2 files that have their own sound, no sound is heard.

Project Settings
DMF: as above (see Properties of your Source Files).
DWS: Format: DVD, TV system: Pal/Secam, Disc templates: High Quality (Approx. 60 min per DVD), Audio Format: tried both MPEG & LPCM, (Source: MD90041 Audio/Video Grabber, Capture audio is ticked, Audio input source: tried both options Realtek AC97 and USB EMP Audio Device).

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)
DVD....but I haven't created it yet because there is no audio

PAL or NTSC
PAL

Error Codes (if any)
For import: none.
For Capture (see above): 'Failed in capturing. The created file is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted.'

Although you both have the same symptoms the cause may be different for each of you.
a couple of questions sping to mind.

1. How long have you had Workshop 2 installed and so is this a recent problem.
Have you ever created a successful DVD containing Dolby sound?
2. Have you tried using a video file with a different source sound format such as LPCM or MPEG
and if so what were the results?
3. Have you installed all of the update packs from the Ulead Website
http://www.ulead.co.uk/tech/dws/dws_ftp.htm
4. Have you tried the uninstall/re-install procedure as shown in this post
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 5544#55544
5. Have you checked your Windows XP error messages:
Checking Windows Event Log for error messages:

check the windows Event Log:-
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System

You will find a red circle with a white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link also contains some hidden code apertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.

This might not matter -- is the version of DVD WS the TRIAL version :?:

If so, the TRIAL does not support Dolby Digital audio...

I didn't know that the trial version doesn't support DD! That explains it. Too bad for Ulead...it also cost them the sale. Looks like a good product but unless I can take something through to a finished DVD, I am skeptical about a product's capability. I started out with Pinnacle's products and wound up selling them on eBay because I couldn't create a finished product.

I've now settled on Adobe Premiere Pro and WAS using Cyberlink's PowerProducer...a pretty rock solid product except that it doesn't like tighted Internet Security (foolish on that company's part to do that).

So the search continues.

Thanks for the answer.

I doubt you will find any trial product that includes Dolby.

Dolby is not free, the software companies must pay to be able to include it in their products and so how many Software Companies do you think are going to pay for you to use something for free.

It would be like saying Here's a fiver for trying our software.

a) you can make a DVD with the trial version: only that the audio must be one of the other formats, not DD

b) we here may be better off without narrow-minded persons with attitudes :D

Narrow minded attitude?

Post by Chris_L »

Narrow minded? Cmon...I am a consumer that expects software to work and that's not being narrow minded.

I appreciate the fact that Ulead provides this software for trial...and I do like what I see. But I have enough experience in this area to know that whatis promised isn't always what's delivered. Having worked in IT for many many years, I have extensive experience in IT and know what I am talking about.

Read other forums (try Pinnacle for example) and you will see the same.

My message was objective, reasonable and not narrow-minded. It's too bad your response was narrow-minded and filled with attitude.

And smiley faces don't change that.

Well I hope that your trial version of Windows was fully functional :D

You know Devil, I really appreciate that some people came out and politely told me what the problem is/was (thank you Skier and GeorgeW). I meant no harm in what I said (often a problem with communications like this).

As for the prodeuct in question, it appears to be an excellent choice in software. Other high-quality software vendors like Adobe and their Encore product offer a trial version that has limited functionality too. However, enough functionality is present to let me determine if the product meets my needs. I purchased Premiere Elements using that process. Not unreasonable...nor am I asking for anything free. I want to purchase the product...not steal it.

Your problem is that you think you can be a smart-*^% and hide beind a smiley face. Every forum has someone like you and they are PITA's. They do the product and the company a disservice.

I wish there was a symbol for "Pound sand" that I could post after this sentence....just haven't found it yet.

Ahuh, trial, I see, oops. Well I'm still looking too, I like DMF but it's menus are not as editable as DWS and if I want to join say 2 clips, it adds 500Mb to the file size which is alot in terms of a 4.7Gb DVD, as if left at 1 clip, it auto adds 2 clips to menu. I like the trim options. If I add 3secs of a subtitle, it also increases the file size substantially.

But I like DWS menu flexibility (drag & drop clips or chapters to wherever u want) but it doesn't have the editing flexibility of DMF (especially trimming).

I'm trying to find a product which has trimming, cropping, menu flexibility,subtitles/titles,easy to use interface, etc. Sounds like a combination of features in both DMF & DWS combined into 1 product would be great, doh, will just have to wait or keep looking.

Thnx for help. :)
