NTSC to PAL Conversion

Post by zedder »

Hi,

If this question is posted in the wrong area, I apologize.

I would like to send a DVD (NTSC format) of family videos to Italy and was wondering if I need to convert it to PAL first? I know in Europe they use PAL, but a while back a friend received a copy of his sisters wedding from Italy and it played in his DVD player here in Ontario. I'm not sure if maybe it was converted to NTSC prior to being mailed to him???

If I need to convert it, does anyone recommend any software that could convert it (preferably freeware!).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Most european new dvd/tv's can play a pseudo ntsc signal, so I would send them the ntsc disc.
Otherwise you need to buy an app for proper standards conversion. If it doesn't play when it goes to Italy, they can always find someone to convert it for them

Zedder,

You should be able to do this with MSP, as VS is capable of converting PAL ot NTSC..

Thanks for your help guys! I just came back from my uncles house and gave him a copy of the NTSC version to bring to Italy as he's leaving tomorrow. Hopefully they can view it...if not they can get it converted like "skier-hughes" says!!!

Thanks again!

Yup, PAL DVD players will usually play NTSC. If not, assuming you start with DV NTSC input, load the DV into your timeline, render it to PAL, then create a new DVD-compliant PAL MPEG. Do NOT convert NTSC MPEG to PAL MPEG: the results will be poor. (Same applies in other direction)

SH: MSP works fine at converting in DV or YUV.

Ron,

I'm afraid these methods do not do it properly. The quality will be poor and it is better to watch an ntsc dvd on a pal set than a poor conversion such as that done by VS etc.

A proper standards converter is neede dto change all the differences.

That is not true, As I said before, if you change in DV or YUV format, the conversion is good. If you try to convert DVD-MPEG, then the results will be poor, no matter what converter you use.

I've found avi conversions using this method to be poor and I have converted mpeg2 PAL to Mpeg2 NTSC and had very good results with Procoder 2, so we'll have to beg to differ on this one.

Just out of interest do you know how VS does the conversion?

I concur. Procoder does a better job of PAL <-> NTSC conversion than MSP. I used it for all the SiT conversions.
