Upgrade or Regular?

Post by aks1972 »

Hi,

I hve Video Studio V9 SE, which came with the hardware I bought. My question is should I buy the upgrade or the regular for 'V10plus'. The SE version I have is eligible for upgrade but it keeps crashing my computer for one reson or the other. Pelase let me know if it is important to have v9 installed on the machine to install upgrade or would the v9 key be sufficient.

Thanks

If the hardware that VS9 SE came with was the ADS DVD Xpress DX2, which is a good piece of kit, then I'll tell you that I chose not to install the bundled VS9 SE, but instead I purchased Video studio 10. I don't like the SE versions of Video Studio as I've had bad experiences with them. I think VS10 is very good and it's perfectly stable on my system. I capture using cap wiz and then import into Video Studio.

My question is that should I buy the upgrade version ($59.99) or the regular version ($99.99). I do not want to install the v9SE on my computer as it keeps crashing. So, would I be able to install the 10+ if I buy the upgrade version, without having to install the SE version first.

Thanks

Hi AKS,

The difference between the upgrade and the full version is just the price. With VS10+ you do not need to have a previous version installed to install an upgrade. Ulead changed the installer. It will ask for the Serial Number of a previous qualifying version and then ask for the serial number of VS10+.

Now let me back up a bit, when you are purchasing an upgrade, Ulead will ask for the serial number of the product (VS9SE) the you are upgrading from. So you do need that number, but you no longer need to have it installed.

Also be aware that there are fewer "goodies" in VS10+ then was in VS9. Fewer menu templates, some have reported fewer effects, and transitions in their copies.

Generally speaking, if VS 9 SE gave you problems on your machine and you don't know why, chances are, you will have problems with another version also. Unless, of course, the problems you were having are version related, rather than hardware.

I would download a trial version first and install that to see if previous problems repeat. If they do, work out what the hardware issues may be and, with the help of the people on this board, try to rectify these. If the trial works ok, by all means, get the upgrade, uninstall the trial first and install the upgraded version. There is no need to pay the full price since the update is essentially the same. Having said that, upgrades, AFAIK, are only available as downloads and many people have had issues with these lately. I for one, have never bought a boxed version of any of the ULEAD programs I use. These are all downloaded and have not given me problems that couldn't be solved by looking at the hardware.

Good luck.

Upgrades are available as physical media (not just as download) - although the Ulead site nolonger shows them as "boxed" - just "Physical CD + manual".

But the postage may make it prohibitive to purchase the boxed or "physical" media. For example, the ULead web-site quotes me for $32 USD shipping. So it is hardly practical for me to purchase a $59 product (upgrade price) with and extra $32! :-) So I have always taken the download option.

Now that you mention it Peter, yes, you are right, the upgrades are available from the web site only but can be DL or CD + manual. Because of the same reasons as stated by you, I have only ever downloaded. An added cost may be your customs department deciding to charge you duty/tax on top of that. Happened to me once with a piece of software I won in a competition. It was shipped from the US but australian customs charged me over 50 bucks for it

FWIW, by way of comparison of shipping charges, I just bought a program called Xara 3D (excellent for titling my videos, BTW). The cost of the program (2 CDs plus manual about the same size as the VS9 one) was US$59 (even though the company is based in the delightfully named Hemel Hempstead Herts. in the UK!!). Postage was a further US$8 -- a good deal less than Ulead's quoted price. And Xara was delivered to me here in Australia from the UK on the sixth day after I had placed my order. I thought that was not bad service. And the ever vigilant Australian Customs were kind enough not to charge me anything either!

Maybe Canberra is exempted? Just lucky Ken, you cannot rely on it. I also got a digital camera shipped from Hong Kong that went through unchecked.

Your CD's were mailed, I gather. In Peter's case ULEAD may have opted to have it sent by courier.
