4Gig file limit in DMF5 ?

Post by tommoynihan »

I currently run DMF3 and I am trialling DMF5.

DMF3 will capture a 60 min DV tape to single AVI file. The trial DMF5 captures in 4Gig chunks. Does the full version of DMF5 do this, and is there any way to change it to capture one whole 60 min DV tape as one AVI file (approx 13.8 Gig) ?

p.s. I'm capturing to an NTFS partiition and the working folder is located on the NTFS partition.

Thanks.

My Windows 2000 install partition is running on Fat32 - If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll load the DMF5 trial onto my laptop which is WinXP on NTFS. I wonder .....

Any particular reason you two are using FAT32 it's easy enough to convert to NTFS and doesn't take long. It doesn't affect any installed programs or settings (not that I have yet come across)

Yes, even the full version MF5 cuts AVI into 4GB chunks, even with NTFS filesystems. It is a real pain in the you-know-what. MF4 just gives you one big file, much simpler.
MF2, MF3, MF4, MF5, VS7, VS10+, VS12, Nero Vision Express. Ricoh and Sony 16x DVD recorder, Sony HC5 High def camera. Also Canopus ADVC110 for AV/DV input through firewire

NTFS vs Fat32 & also DMF5 new behaviour

Post by tommoynihan »

I've found that unless you really need a particular feature of NTFS (like files over 4Gig), then some of it's disadvantages can be annoying. The following comparison is quite interesting.

http://cquirke.mvps.org/ntfs.htm

Anyway, it looks like the previous post has confirmed that Ulead have changed the behaviour in DMF5, so that is splits a capture into 4 Gig chunks. Does anyone know why ? (or perhaps more importantly, how to change it back to capture one single file if that is your preference !)

There is in fact a very easy method of reading a corrupt NTFS Hard Drive which I have done several times when repairing malfunctiong systems for friends/relatives etc.

Attach the Faulty Hard Drive to your computer as a slave drive.

So I am sorry but the person who wrote the article in
http://cquirke.mvps.org/ntfs.htm
Has failed to take this method (and no doubt a few others) into consideration.

Depending upon the reason for the Hard Drive Failure you might also gain access via your XP Setup disc.

NTFS not to blame ?

Thanks for the response. At least we know that NTFS on the OS partition isn't the problem. I notice that you have DMF5. Have you captured with it ? Does it split the capture into 4 Gig files ?

Sorry but I'm at my workplace at the moment. I will give it a try later.
Looks interesting this.

FYI, me and another user experience similar problems with patched VideoStudio9. All drives NTFS and video is still split.

Looks like Ulead consider this the way forward.

I wonder if they've left an option somewhere to turn it off ?

Can't comment on VS since I use MSP. However, AFAIK, the capture modules of all ULEAD programs are similar. In the set up menu of the capture module, you should find a setting for splitting a capture by scene and to set the max file size you want. Not sure if VS or MF have this facility since I haven't used VS for years and never captured with MF. Also not at my video machine right now, but will have a look later today to see if MF has this facility.

If your file system is FAT 32, independent of the capture program used, you will not be able to have a file larger than 4Gb and some older OS's like Win95 have had limitations to 1 or 2GB as well. NTFS uses HD space more efficiently than FAT 32.

Ok Here goes. I have started this reply before commencing the capture., I will complete it when the capture is complete.

I have loaded DVDMF5 and turned on the camcorder.
I have checked Advanced Settings then selected capture options and noted there is a tick box "Split video" I have this unchecked.

OK Here goes....
Source DV
Capture Mode Fixed Duration with zeros in all fields.

-----Capture commenced ------
time passes....
-----Capture stopped -------

I manually stopped the capture at 30 mins as I thought this will have taken me well past the 4GB threshold.

Two Thumbnails appeared in my library
The first thumbnail had a file size of 4,193,359
The second thumbnail 2,137,038

I then checked Windows Explorer and this confirmed two files with those file sizes were created.

My system is fully NTFS.

I guess this confirms the finding mentioned in these posts.

I've contacted support regarding my problem with VS9, but also mentioning MF.
After some e-mail exchange (basically, with instructions to reinstall), I got this:
"We will try to simulate the problem here in some systems in our office so we could generate a solution to this problem. Currently, I am not encountering the same problem in our system. So it's maybe hard for us to forward this problem in our product managers, software development teams and other relevant departments in our office but we will. We will keep you posted for any developments regarding this issue or you may visit our website regularly for any updates."

So, maybe try to report it as well, so that the problem gets higher priority.

So that between us we can add weight to the suggestion by
Xyzzy2 has anyone captured a single file exceeding the 4GB limit?
