New guy; Saving Audio as wav or mp3, whatever?

I am wanting to split the audio from a mpg and save the audio to a wav, mp3 or other audio format for a project.
I have videostudio 9, I have performed a search with no solid answers.

The better option would be WAV format.
Some Users have reported the odd problem every now and again with MP3 formats.
