Joining chapters

When editing and Joining separate movies in Movie factory the final file is bigger and hence will not fit on a 4.7 DVD Why? the movie should not get larger if I leave the Videos as added they fit, to get round this I have Burned to hard disk and then used shrinkdvd to make it fit. but why does it get bigger does anyone know,and how I can fix it.
