VideoStudio - Trial Problems

Post by bhumeny »

I am nusing the 30 day trial version of VideoStudio and am having a few problems. The first and major problem is as follows:
I bring in 2 video files, one 24 mins. long and the second 6 mins. long. They are convertedby VideoStudio to allow editing. I edit the video, cut it into sections, add titles etc. and save the project. If I now close VideoStudio and then reopen the program, all appears ok, but the videos have been corrupted or something. The first is only 16 secs. long and the second is 2.4 secs. long. If I llok at the timeline etc. The titlesand audio I added are still there but the video is messed up.
The only way to fix it is to delete the video thumbnails and add them again. Then I have to redit the video and adjust the titles etc. to fit into the proper space.
To avoid this, I have to do everything, including creating the dvd without ever exiting the program....
I have tried this several times and it happens everytime. Is this a bug or a restriction with the trial code? Where are these converted files supposeed to be stored?
Thanks.

Trial Problems - continued

Sorry about the typos in my first note...
The second problem I am having is with titles. I have added titles to the video and put them at the bottom of the screen. They appear just fine in VideoStudio, but when I create a movie or dvd, about 1/2 of the titles are chopped off.
Besides re-editing them and moving them all up is there anything I can do to fix or avoid this problem?
Thanks.

When you save the vieo file click Options.
You probably have Preview Range selected instead of entire project.

How to change Save option

Steve:
I am not sure how or where to set this...
I looked under File > Preferences but couldn't find it.
Thanks.

Your second question -- regarding titles -- is relatively easy by comparison to your main problem. You are undoubtedly ignoring the two yellow boxes which appear on screen when you prepare your titles. The outer box is the absolute limit of what is called the 'safe area' of the screen, and indicates the area which will actually appear on your TV screen. (All standard TVs over-scan and cut off a little from around the edges of video, though the exact area will vary according to the make and type of the TV.)

The inner yellow box on screen indicates the area where your titles are absolutely safe and best placed for optimum view on TV. So if you are wanting to have your titles along the bottom of the TV screen but still with a little space between the bottom of the title and the bottom of the screen, I would put them right on the bottom line of the inner box, or, if you must, just a little over it, but definitely not right down to the outer line.

As for your main problem, I am a little puzzled by a couple of things. First, you say your video files 'are converted by VideoStudio to allow editing.' I'm sorry to say, this is virtually meaningless without more information. Where did the video come from in the first place? How were they captured? What were their original properties and exactly what have they been converted to?

You then say you edit and 'save the project' do you mean this literally? I mean, are you just saving the project file, which is only a small file with a .VSP extension which tells Video Studio what was in the project, where the files are, and what was done to them by way of editing. You need to be aware here that saving the project alone does NOT produce a final video file. Or did you (as you should) go to Share > Create Video File > DVD, and produce a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 which you can then go on to burn in a separate step?

You then say you 'close VideoStudio and then reopen the program, all appears ok, but the videos have been corrupted or something'. Do you actually close the whole program, or just the project (which is all you need to do in fact)? When you say all appears OK, what exactly do you mean? Do you just mean the whole program opens and seems to be working? Or that when you reopen the project .VSP file, everything appears on screen OK?

Anyway, Steve is probably correct on this one. But if what he suggests does not work, then next time you edit the whole files, once you are finished editing, select Share > Create Video File > DVD, to produce your mpeg-2 for burning. Then close the PROJECT (NOT/NOT the whole program) simply by going to File > New Project. This will ask to save the existing project, then close it and start a new project with an empty timeline. Do NOT put anything in the timeline, but then click on Share > Create Disc > DVD. This will open the burning page. Insert your mpeg-2 as described above. (Do NOT/NOT insert the VSP file for burning.) Build your menus and chapters, and burn.

Saving a Project/Video

Post by bhumeny »

Sorry I am such a newby. With the trial version, there is no help file.
What you are terlling me is that the only way to save the editing I have done is to do a Share > Create DVD or File...?
This means I have to do all of my editing etc. in one sitting. That's a lot of work, especially if there is 2 hrs. of video.
Or can I opne the mpeg-2 file in a new project and continue my editing?
Thanks again for your help.

In order to save what you have done in your Project you don't have to go to Share>Create...

Just go to the file menu and choose save or save as. This will save your Project that you are working on to a VSP file, which is a Video Studio Project file. Then you can come back later and resume where you left off.

You can download the manual for VS10 from here:
http://www.ulead.com/vs/documents.htm

You might also have a look through Steve's tutorial he has been working on titled From Camcorder to DVD You can view it here:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13421

Of course I can't pass up the opprotunity to plug Charlie Hills work, you can go to his website and get his Getting Results with VideoStudio 9 book. He apparently is not going to write one on VS10, but the VS9 book will give you what you need to get you up and running. It is not only a book, but comes with sample VSP files, sample video files too. It's the best resource to learn about video editing I've found.
