No Deinterlacing with VideoStudio 10

Post by markjayne »

I have upgraded to VS 10 from version 9 but have found that when I save a video in wmv format and frame based there is no deinterlacing on the final video, and a get a ghosting affect on fast moving objects. I am using the same settings as I did in VS 9. Version 9 deinterlaced the video and I had great results. Is there a setting I should be using or is this a version 10 problem.

Mark,
It is not a general problem with 10+ because I have created frame based high definition video files in Mpeg2 and Divx that display no interlace motion artifacts. Ditto down resed Mpeg standard definition 720x480 files.

What are your video file property settings when creating?

Hi John,

My settings are WMV 384x288 resolution. 1350Kbps and windows Media Video 9 encoder. I use exactly the same settings as I do with version 9 but get different results.
I use these settings for video's to be posted on the net. I have looked at Make Movie Manager but it does'nt help.
Any ideas,

Mark

Mark,
384x288 is quite low if you are looking for good picture quality. If your source video clips have more resolution, you could try bumping up the resolution to match. If not, can you recapture with more resolution? - e.g., 720x480.

Hi John.

I use the lower resolution to keep the file size down, as I use my movies for the internet. I get good quality in the settings I use. A 4 minute video takes about 20mb. But its the deinterlacing I can't get to work with VS 10. I can't think of anything else it can be apart from a VS10 problem.

Thanks,

Mark

I know it’s off topic but watching your first video reminded me of when I first bought my Digital Camcorder.
20x optical zoom 990 x digital zoom.

I had been playing with the settings in my back garden checking out the digital zoom. A week or so later one of my sons asked if he could borrow the camcorder because his girlfriend was going on a parachute jump.

I couldn't go because I was working so lent it to him knowing I could later share in the experience by watching the video.

Later that day my son was telling everyone how nervous he was and that he couldn't hold the camcorder straight (I had advised him to take a tripod but you know what your children are like!)

Close up shots, no problem but when he tried to zoom in on the airplane and also his girlfriend falling from the sky the picture was all over the place.

It was only a few weeks later that I realised the camcorder retained the zoom settings after being turned off and he was desperately trying to film everything with the 990x digital zoom activated!

Mark,
Well, you could first try to read the properties of your WMV file by either loading it in VS10+ timeline and reading its video properties (rt mouse/properties). If the Field Order property is listed as Frame-Based, it has been deinterlaced and you will have to look elsewhere for the cause of the poor picture quality.

Edit: I just tried to "Custom" convert a standard def. mpeg file to WMV in 10+ and all I see for options is a bewilding array of some 30-odd WMV templates, none of which match the properties that you list. Are you in PAL or NTSC country? There doesn't seem to be a way to dial up a custom property list, that would let me selectively control the field order. This brings up the question of how you specified field order.
