Burning without Ulead DVD Player

Post by David_S »

How can you burn a DVD in MF 4 and MF5 without embedding Ulead DVD Player. I am sure there must be a way as it is annoying to have two players start simultaneously- Ulead's and any associated player such as WinDVD.

Hi David,

I wasn't aware that Ulead DVD player was embeded when you burn a DVD. If you are wanting to use another DVD player to play your DVD on your computer, then you need to re-associate the DVD burner or file type, to another DVD Player.

Under Windows Explorer choose Tools>Folder Options> then on the File Types tab, scroll down to the VOB extension. You will see that it probably has Ulead DVD Player set as "Open with". Change that to whatever player you want to use to view your DVD.

You can also right-click on your DVD Player/burner under My Computer. Then select Properties and click on the Auto Play tab. There you can change the player to use to auto play when you insert a disc into the drive.

Hi David,

Out of curiosity, if you explore your burned DVD's -- what files do you see in the root directory :?:

If you mean what I think you mean.
Put a DVD disc into your computer and wait for the dialog box to appear
[DVD movie]
[What do you want Windows to do?]
and below this a list of various programs.

Select the one you want to use and then make sure the little box
[always do the selected action] has been ticked.

Well actually I am now becoming confused! In MF3 there was an option on the burn dialogue page where you could tick a box "Include DVD Player". This did, as far as I know (or thought I knew) embed the player on the DVD so that if you gave a copy of the DVD to a person who did not have a DVD player installed on his computer Ulead DVD player popped up to play it. A useful feature in those circumstances. This check box is not present in MF4 and MF5 but the feature appears to be still operational on the DVDs I burned with these versions.

For whenever I autoran a DVD the Ulead Player would pop up even though I had associated VOB files with PowerDVD in folder options/file types. And just last weekend this was "confirmed" when I played a "burned" DVD on a friend's work laptop. Up popped both the Ulead Player and WinDVD which was presumably his default player. I am pretty sure he would not have any Ulead programs at all on his computer but have not been able to check.

Back home on my desktop only Ulead Player autoruns despite the association (?) with PowerDVD. I do have Ulead programs installed including Ulead DVDPlayer 2. Interestingly when I disable the Ulead Player by renaming the exe file, no player starts when I insert a DVD but I get an error message that the path is invalid. Perhaps the DVD searches for installed versions of DVDPlayer before using the embedded one (if there is one that is!). I have also found that the Ulead Player autoruns with both "burned" and commercial DVDs, so presumably the installation of the Ulead Player sets it to be the default player.

Both my friend's and my computer were running W2k. And the only way I have found of preventing the autorunning is to disable it in the registry. I have also tried "burned" DVDs on 2 desktops running WinXP. In both cases the standard window popped up asking which mediaplayer to use. Ulead was not an option. No Ulead programs are installed in these computers.

George, I have had a look at the root directory of the "Burned" DVD and all that is there are the standard AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.

So I am left with the following questions:-
1) How do I get my W2k computer to autorun DVDs using any players other than Ulead Player?
2) How do I uninstall the Ulead Player when there is no uninstall feature? I think it was first installed with MF3 and upgraded to v2 with MF4.
3) Is there an "embedded" Ulead Player feature in MF3? MF4? MF5?

You can see why I am more confused than ever.

Thanks for that Maddrummer. You confirm most of what I was coming to think - that the embedding was a feature of MF3 only. But I will check with an MF5 burned version on a non XP computer when I next have the opportunity. The DVD which I used on the laptop was burned with MF5 so I will try to find out from the owner whether any Ulead products were actually installed.

And if you are wondering why I still have MF3 installed it is because I installed MF5 and then foolishly uninstalled MF4 and MF3 only to realise I had lost Disc Creator and many handy menu templates. When I tried to reinstall MF4, being an upgrade, it required an earlier version installed which was no longer there. Ditto MF3. At this point MF5 would not load properly either so I uninstalled MF5 too and deleted every reference to MF I could find in the registry. Starting with MF2.5 which is the only non-upgrade version I had on CD, I installed the upgrade to MF3, upgrade to MF4, and then finally the upgrade to MF5!!!! Unbelievably they all work, but I am too scared to uninstall 2.5 and 3 in case everything gets messed up again. During all this carry-on I discovered a simple freebie burning program which works just as well and is far simpler and quicker to use than Nero or Disc Creator so the exercise did have some benefit.

Anyway thanks everyone for your comments.

Because you only see the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in the root directory, there's NO DVD Runtime Player installed on the burned DVD.

You might want to keep MF3 DC in case you ever do need to embed a DVD Runtime Player...
