Blue screen

Post by Wyeast »

Hello,
I have videoed a scene using a blue screen background, but my blue screen has many shades of blue. How would I eliminate some of these extra shades, so I can make the background disappear? Also, is there a way to do multiple frames, so each frame doesn't have to be done individually. I use Media Studio Pro 6.0

Not sure what you mean by this, but assume you don't mean that the background you used was actually different shades, as the obvious answer to that would be to use one all the same colour.

The key to good chroma work is excellent lighting, so you set up lights to evenly light the blue background then keep your subject far enough away from it so as the lighting on them does not cast shadows.

You'll either conitnue to struggle to get this keyed properly or have to do it again.

I don't have MSP 6, but I would assume it too has a Similarity setting which allows you to make adjustments to allow MSP to perform keying even if the blue screen varies in hues. You'll have to experiment a little to find the right setting.

Blue screen filter -v- Green Screen filter.
I was never quite sure of the difference between the two.
That is not sure until I read the excellent underpriced book by Charlie Hills

"Getting Results with Media Studio Pro 8"

Put simply green screen gets rid of background colour that is more or less specific to a certain shade.

Blue screen does a similar job but gets rid of a range of similar colours - in otherwords it is less specific.

The terms blue screen and also green screen are in themselves misleading because it gives the impression that the background must be blue or green.
In fact the background to be removed can be any colour.

The background can be any colour you like.
Green works best with film.
Blue works best with DV.
These colours are best used as they are furthest from natural skin tones, Steve try using a red background with David Dickinson in the foreground

Mind you it just shows the benefit of getting hold of Charlies book so that you have a handy reference guide nearby for when one of these things come up.

How did you manage to persuade him to give you a commission? :D

Been wondering the same thing!

Have been so tempted to buy the book, but even at the very reasonable price, for me, it is still quite expensive

If it were twice the price, it would still be a gift. Where else can you get 460-odd pages on a very specialised subject and a CD-ROM for that price?

Can't argue with that, but converted to local currency, that's my grocery bill for the week!

Greg

(PS that's excluding shipping and duty once it gets here, total probably doubles)

Well, you can download it in zipped PDF. No transport, no import duties or taxes AND half the price.
