Should I Keep VS7 after Upgrading to VS8?

Post by grassercj »

When I upgraded from VS7 to VS8, it didn't tell me I had to uninstall VS7 and now both are installed on my system. I'm tempted to just uninstall both and just reinstall VS8. But I also noticed that some things have been changed around and that many of the sample clips were not retained between the two versions. So before I get rid of VS7, is there anything that VS7 does better than VS8 that would encourage me to keep both installed?
Thanx.

Can't think of anything that version 7 does better than 8 but whether you delete it or not is up to you, I still have versions 6, 7, and 8 on my PC and as long as you are not having space problems on your HDD it is handy sometimes just to pop back - especially if trying to help people on here - also you can work out how to transfer any clips or effects at your liesure when you need them.

It does no harm to have more than one version installed - remove V7 if you need hard drive space.

So PJ, Don't what? Don't upgrade, don't delete the old VS7?

I've decided to keep VS7 because last night I was capturing some video on VS8 using VBR @ 7200 and the results were very choppy. I tried about 8 settings including what I used to use in VS7 all with choppy results. So I decided to go back to VS7 and it captured flawlessly. I was using the same settings, same capture plug-in and same destination drive (and folder). Until I can understand the difference, I guess I will keep both.

the same here

 the same here i also kept VS7 as it seems to do a lot of things much beter and easier then VS8 so my advice is keep VS7 and use them in combination with each other that gives the best result

Can't capture properly w/VS8

I've never been able to capture properly with VS8. On the other hand VS7 works just fine on the same PC! The problem for us is dropped frames. I can capture a 30 minute video with 0 droppred frames in VS7 and try it with VS* and get so many dropped frames it starts looking like a frame counter.

I capture in VS7 and then do everything else in VS8 - only because I have a crippled version of VS7. Otherwise, VS7 would be fine for me.

Have never gotten any userful feedback as to what the difference between the two that would cause the problem.

I'm definitely keeping VS7. After searching for the save trimmed video option that was plainly on the Edit page, I finally found it under the Clip section in the upper right. However, it doesn't seem to work either. It saves the trimmed clip, but when I try to use the clip in either VS7 or VS8, it crashes the program.

So I guess I will be using VS7 for that function as well. I mainly upgraded to be able to make dual layer DVDs. I'll probably use VS7 for everything else.

The one difference between v7 and v8 that was a deal-breaker for me was the step-advance button. In v7 it would continue to advance frame by frame while the button was held down, whereas in v8 you had to click click click.... Since I like to edit my clips very precisely, the constant clicking was not something I want to do.

I never did upgrade to v8

Whether or not to uninstall Video Studio 7

Post by Max Sendit »

If you bought the "upgrade" version of Video Studio 8, it will not install unless Video Studio 7 is already on your computer. So, if you delete Video Studio 7 and for some reason you need to reinstall the upgrade verson of Video Studio 8, you won't be able to do it.
Video Studio 8 will do everything that Video Studio 7 does and then some. There are a few transitions in Video Studio 7 that Video Studio 8 doesn't have. And there are a few that Video Studio 8 has that Video Studio 7 doesn't. The way Video Studio 8 accomplishes certain tasks is different than found in Video Studio 7 but the end result is either the same or better in Video Studio 8.
Of course, if you bought the "full" version of Video Studio 8, it will install without Video Studio 7 being on your computer.
Both the "upgrade" and the "full" versions of Video Studio 8 are complete (the same in size) versions. As I said previously, the "upgrade" version will not install on your pc unless it recognizes a previous version of Video Studio on your computer whereas the complete version will install without a previous version extant on your pc.

You don't need to have VS7 installed on your computer to install the upgrade version of VS8. All you have to do is stick the VS7 cd in your cdrom and tell the VS8 upgrade where to look for it.

Merlin,
This is news to me that you don't have to have VS 7 installed and can be recognized if only in the CD Rom drive. I was told by tech support it definitely had to be installed on the computer. Sometime, I'll try it your way and see if it works.

Merlin is definitely correct, and the same thing applies to all Ulead product upgrades. I know as I have had to re-load various of their products a number of times.
