I tried to put a movie on a DVD, but it excedes the limit of file size and is a couple GBs...but it is a mere 300 mbs. Help?

I assume you mean 300kbps which is probably too low for a DVD.* On the other hand, 300mbs is too high for a DVD... The maximum is about 10mbps (10,000kbps)...but it is a mere 300 mbs...
And, assuming that the file is not already MPEG-2 formatted, it's going to get re-coded to MPEG-2 for the DVD, and you are comparing "apples to oranges". ...The bitrate of the source video has nothing to do with the bitrate on the final DVD.
If you don't need high quality, you can squeeze over 3 hours of video on a regular (single layer) DVD.
If you have the "free" SE version, you may not qualify for updates. (However, you probably do qualify for the upgrade price if you decide to upgrade to MF5.)when i update it says mf3 is not installed
*I think the minimum DVD bitrate is around 1500-2000kbps.
