Capturing

Post by 62cwil »

I recently saw a post regarding capturing tapes made on an 8mil analog Sonay CCD0TRV52 camera thru my Cannon Mini-DV camera into my computer via firewall. I understood I connected camera with the tape to my Mini-DV with the RCA jacks and then my Mini-DV to my computer via firewall. Do I turn both cameras on to play or what is procedure. I will capture into my computer using the DV-1 setting and go from their. Any help or comments is appreciated.

A firewall keeps hackers out of your computer. :D You're referring to firewire also known as IEEE 1394 or I-Link. They are all the same except the brand. Coverting analog this way produces great results.

How to go about it varies by cam. The usual procedure is to plug the Analog cam into the digital then the digital cam into your computer and turn it on. It should be instantly recognized by you capture software. From there you need to activate the pass thru in the cams menu. At this point you should see a preview of what the analog cam is outputting, usually the blue screen. Press play on the analog cam and hit the record button on your capture program.

That is just an outline of the basics, you need to read the manual that came with cam for the specifics on how to do it.

That's pretty much it. You will probably need to wander through the menu structure of your dv camera - it should have something that looks like AV/DV OUT, or similar. This needs to be selected ON - now the unit will function as a pass-through device.
Then you connect the cameras as you have outlined, with no tape in the DV camera. Start the analogue camera playing manually, and you should see the output in the screen of the DV camera and the preview screen of VS8. Click capture to record it.
