VS 9-Importing dvds- some work some don't

Post by jrflyck1 »

Having trouble with importing some dvd's into vs9. Situation is for commercially produced dvd's. Any protection is removed with Any Dvd, so that is not the problem. I can import probably 80-90% successfully, but the other 10-20% cannot. Basically, when import screen pops up and I try to select a chapter to view and import, it will not play. If I then import the dvd and try to add the resulting mpg to a project, vs9 will not add it, but no error message, it just hangs.

Alternate things I have tried are to rip to hd and then import; renaming vobs to mpg; different ripping programs; creating mpeg file with TMPG DVD Author(this sometimes works, but often the resulting mpg seems to be defective in that it stops playing in the middle of the file); fix vts; reencoding with Super(gui for several encoding programs), which works, but the resulting files are low quality.

Don't know if these are just defective discs that can't be fixed or what.

I'm pretty much a newbie as far as working with video.

Thanks for any suggestions.

This seems to be somewhat "normal". I don't know what the solution is... Some users report problems importing from their DVDs made on some stand-alone recorders too.

When I had this problem, the only thing that worked for me was SUPER (in combination with a couple of other utilities). And you're right... it does re-code the MPEG. If fact, all of the "DVD-to-MPEG" programs that I tried-out re-coded the MPEG. Most of them wanted to make a VCD quality MPEG-1 file. The Ulead programs are the only ones I've find that can extract the MPEG intact.... when they work. :?

Maybe it's the multiple soundtracks, multiple angles, subtitles, and other "junk" in the MPEG file???

Maybe its little defects.... I've noticed that problem with CDs. The CD player's error-correction software can hide defects that ripping software can't fix.

A couple of other programs that are supposed to "fix" MPEG streams:
PVAStrumento
ProjectX
VideoReDo

You might find VOBedit handy too. It can strip-out some of the "junk"
