DVD audio transfer
I transferred by VHS old home movies to DVD on a JVC DR-M5S. I can add the video clips to my Ulead VS8 via the DVD, but the problem is I get no audio. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
Does your DVD recorder record Dolby AC3 audio? An extra-cost AC-3 add-on was required for VS8. I don't think the add-on is available any more. However, VS10 does support AC3 and the upgrade cost is not much more than the add-on. (VS10 also has an improved DVD-Import feature.)
WARNING - MPEGs (i.e. DVD) are not meant to be edited. Some people don't seem to have problems, but some of us have had "lip-sync" problems (and some other weird problems) when we've edited MPEGs.
And, most editing (other than simple cutting & splicing) requires the MPEG to be de-compressed and re-compressed. The extra compression step results in some (additional) quality loss, since MPEG is lossy compression.
If you do get problems when editing your videos, you may need get hold of a capture device that can capture to AVI/DV, or you may need to get a special-purpose MPEG editor. (A special-purpose MPEG editor cannot get-around the 2nd compression loss, but it can prevent the other problems.)
