DVD chapters and SP1 release notes

Post by DarrenD »

I was really pleased when the release notes said I could press SHIFT+F5 to add a DVD chapter cue point. The pre-SP1 help system states I had to use the mouse to add one on the timeline rather than in the preview window (which seems more appropriate). There was also the DVD chapter cue manager but that seemed a timelist-based entry rather than "add the cue as you see the clip being played".

Anyway, I was frustrated to find SHIFT+F5 didn't work. Then I noticed a tooltip balloon over an icon called the "Preview window menu" icon (last but one on the bottom of the preview window) and it all became clear, silly me, I should have using CTRL+F5!

The help system (as far as I can see) has not been updated to reflect this new way of adding DVD chapter cues. Doing a bit more investigation I found you cannot add DVD chapter cues in the source window, as F5 or CTRL+F5 just add source cue points (black triangles below the timeline picture of the source [filmstrip/thumbnail/filename mode]). However, I could PAGE-UP or PAGE-DOWN to these cues on the timeline and then press CTRL+F5 to add the DVD chapter cues.

Excellent. Just pointing it out in case others are as puzzled as me!

Yup! This slipped through: I pointed out the documentation error on 29 April, but it was not corrected. I suggest users cross out what is says in the Release Notes and replace by:
Fix the problem that cue/chapter point mode didn’t switch when you hit F5 or Ctrl+F5. Now hitting F5 will add cue point and turn to Cue mode, hitting Ctrl+F5 will add chapter point and turn to Chapter mode.

I had reported this also. Seems that they where very busy to get the sp out and ignored all such minor things, even if the effort to correct them would have been minimal (shouldnt have cost much time to change one word in documentation). This is ok if you consider how much benefit gives us the sp. The most important part was surely the stability. MSP8 never crashed since I installed the first puplic beta :!: (I know, I should never tell such things aloud :) ) Special thanks to all Ulead developers for that!
Also thanks for the anti shake filter (even if I dont need it much, since my camcorder does allready a good job there).
I hope that Ulead will not stop now, but will instead work on sp2 to remove all incomfortabilities and minor bugs. Most important I think are:
- improve title editor
- ensure that zooming allways works

Please note that I am not complaining that it is inconsistent. I am glad that I finally found the answer. I can now start to add DVD chapters easily and that is great. I created the topic in case someone else got stuck and didn't stumble on the answer.
