Newbie looking for editing help

Post by res »

I am new to video stuff, upgraded this week to P4-3.0 ghz computer w 1 g RAM and huge hard drive capacity that is capable of handling it. Using Osprey 100 capture board, Hitachi analog camcorder. Successfully captured 30 min MPEG and created DVD disk with very good video/audio quality. BUT- I cannot figure out how to edit the video file to delete unwanted sections etc. The help file with Video Studio 8 is virtually useless and tutorials aren't much better. There seems to be no book out yet (I think I need need VS for Dummies!) Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Take a look at the links in the Sticky at the top of this forum:

I've worked with the tutorials from Jerry Jones, but the other ones look good, too. Don't overlook the tutorials for DVD Movie Factory since there are much in common between the two programs.

Have a look at my website Ray - particularly the page "Edit in Timeline"

Res,
I googled on "Osprey 100 specifications" and came up wondering about this capture device: It lists only 640 x 480 and 320 x 240 and has no audio input - suggesting that you can just plug in your audio into whatever sound board you have.... It doesn't list Mpeg2 as a capture format. It does not list the maximum bitrate for capturing AVI. Not too optimistic.

If your intention is to burn quality DVDs you need a capture device that will capture to Mpeg2 with a frame size of 720 x 480 and a video bitrate of close to 8 Mbps.

Please post the complete list of video properties of the mpeg file that you captured.

A lot of PCI based capture cards go that route including some very good ones such as the ATI AIW. Some do have audio inputs but they still have to be either plugged into the mic/aux on the soundcard externally or connected internally to the soundcard. It isn't really a input since most don't have sound processors onboard. They simply pass the analog signal off to the soundcard for proccessing.

John, I know perfectly well that the OSPREY 100 is a minimal capture board. But it's what I have until I eventually upgrade it. Meanwhile this is a learning experience and I am really surprised by the quality of my captured video on the TV screen. I know it isn't a "quality video' by your standards. But it's not bad. My problem now is to understand the video editing functions of VideoStudio as they aren't well explained in the system....ray

Brian, your step by step instructions in "Edit in Timeline" are just the sort of "how to do it" clarification that I need. Thank you. I'll follow them tonight....
