extremely high amount of dropped frames....why?

Post by gordon_fan_24 »

I have been capturing and editing in VS9 since it came out over a year ago. I have always done one hour captures, as thats how long a mini-dv tape is. While I only have 512mb of ram, I usually only get 5-10 dropped frames over the hour. I NEVER have anything else running, and I always restart my computer before capturing. Today, I tried to do another hour long capture, I came back to the computer near the end of the capture, and saw that I had 96 dropped frames! What could cause something like this to happen, when it worked well before?

There are many things that could cause dropped frames. My first question would be if anything has changed in your system configuration between successful captures? Driver updates, new programs installed, etc.

Here is a good resource about dropped frames:

VS10 more demanding of system resources than VS9 (which was more demanding than VS8, which was more demanding than VS7, which was...) :?: :?: :?:

How are you connecting your camera to your pc?

Areyou using Firewire and capturing to DV format?

Well, I have captured many, many hours of DV-AVI with nil dropped frames. Not sure why is your dropping them. What is the speed of your HDD? Are you using fire wire?

Dropped frames

That's nothing. I used to get hundreds of dropped frames, from UVS 6 up to and including UVS10. Drove me nuts! This is on two different computers and two different cameras. I now capture using the free program WinDV. It captures perfectly every time, and then I just import the AVI files in to UVS. Just Google it.and install . Other than that UVS has always done a great job for me in every other way.

As stated here, you should be able to capture hours of DV with no dropped frames. You might want to create a profile for capturing/editing video so that absolutely no unnecessary programs are running in the background. Processor speed and RAM are also important, as is having Direct Memory Access enabled on your hard drive settings.
