VS 10 Media Sorting Question

Post by dblml320 »

Hello,

Is there any way to get VS10 to sort media in the time line by file name? I have a number of pictures, with their date in the file name. I would like to get VS10 to sort them in the time line for me. Is there a way to do this?

They are not sorted on the timeline, you sort them in the library:
To arrange clips in the Library, click in the Library to open the Options menu, then select Sort by Name or Sort by Date.

The way video clips are sorted by date depends on the file format. DV AVI files (i.e., AVI files captured from DV camcorders) will be arranged by order of the shooting date and time of the footage. Other video file formats will be sorted by order of file date.

I find the library function in VS to be limiting ... I have found a workaround of sorts using Windows Explorer. I create a Windows Explorer window that is at the location of series of pictures. I set the view mode to be Thumbnails. In this way I can see bith filenames, sorted by date (or whatever other settings Explorer will sort on), and the pictures themselves.

So now, instead of adding the pictures to the VS library, I drag them directly into the timeline of a track I am developing. In this way I get them in the order that I want. Explorer will also let me drag multiple pics at the same time. They are added in the order within the selection.

The only negative is that after each drag operation the focus changes to VS, and the explorer window is gets covered. So then I click on the explorer window again to bring it above VS on the screen.
