First: When I start and stop clips my screen goes black for a couple of seconds. Is that normal?
Second: I am doing a project of a recent trip with DV and digital photos. Everything was going fine until about the time I started adding music. Now when I try to play the project and other editing functions there is a 5 to 10 minute delay with hourglass. Scrolling through the timeline or playing a single clip works fine. Can I fix this short of starting over?

Hi Steve, and welcome to the forums..
First you system is well up to the task of video editing. Now in Preferences settings, do you have the playback set to Instant or High Quality ? Do you get the progress bar showing that your project is being rendered when you are previewing it? That is a sign that it is set to High Quality.
Since everything was fine until you started adding music, what is the format of the music, MP3? It is recommended to use WAV files for your music in VS.
Could you post your project properties, and the properties of your video clip?

Well that didn't reveal anything that would be causing VS to run slower. Since you have a couple of HDDs do you have the Preview location set to another drive or partition then VS?
For example I'm running 2 200 gig HDD,. The first HDD is where my OS, and all my programs are. I have my Working Folder and location for Preview files set to a partition dedicated to that on my 2nd HDD.
You might have a look at sjj1805's tutorial on setting up a video editing profile: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13950
Do you have any applications running in the background? Try to disable all background apps. Even though you have a fairly fast computer, apps running in the background can cause unexpected problems, when you least expect it.

I did a little test with a new project and found it is the smartsound files that are slowing things down. I did a search and it confirmed my theory.
The sound works well but the slowdown is unacceptable.

Thanks every one for your ideas & suggestions
I have started my project again and have discovered that when I use smartsoud music clips it slows down the prevewing of the project. I went back to my old project removed the Smartsound clips and it started within 6 seconds.
has any one else had that problem ?

I have always had problems with Smartsound slowing down my project. I've questioned it a couple of times on this forum but have never found a solution.
What I do is decide on what Smartsound track I want to use, then remove it from my project until I'm completely done with my editing. When I'm ready to render I put the Smartsound track back in and create my rendered file. That way the Smartsound track doesn't slow me down when I'm previewing my edits.

I emailed Smartsound and this is their reply
I have run some tests and have only been able to come up with a slight delay. With that said, I am working with about 5 minutes of video on a fairly fast machine. What I suspect is happening is that you have much more than that on the timeline. Part of the SmartSound dynamic music resizing feature is that the file is created at the time you play the timeline preview. It is not until you render your project that the sound file is actually disconnected from the dynamic feature. This allows you to resize the file at any time during your editing process. The trade-off, it appears, is that it slows Ulead. Some of the other partners we have resolved this by creating a temporary sound file. I am not able to find out if Ulead is doing that or not.
