[solved] Problem starting PI 11 > it crashes.

Post by DomGer »

Hello all,

My Problem
========
i bought a brandnew Version of PI 11.
After install i noticed PI 11 doesn´t start correct:
It hangs while the File "u32Ico.fio" has to be loaded.

What i did
=======
So i started my Search for any Help in the www...
I tried to reinstall, so i deleted all Temp-Files as you mentioned, even the registry i cleaned up. I deactivated all Programs that do not belong to the OS (Firewall, Antivirus, etc). I deleted PI 11 and reinstalled it again.
Nothing. It hangs while startup - see above.

Is it the Fio-Folder?
============
Now i tried this: i renamed the Folder "Fio" in "Fio.bak" and started PI 11 again. And....it works, PI 11 starts!
BUT...
I can´t open ANY Pictures (JPG, GIF, UFO, etc).

Please Help.

im sorry, but i must say that Photoimpact 11 is not as good as former Versions in this case.
I def. can´t use it. I have done all tips posted here and in other forums.
This is a shame for Ulead to sell such a software that you can´t install and use it.

...And there´s still NO support.....

So my tip to all Readers:
DONT BY Photoimpact 11.
I´m sorry.

(now i must see that i get my money back)

Dom
Sorry no one here was able to answer you earlier but we do our best :D
When you try to open PhotoImpact are you using the same XP user account that installed the program (with administrator rights)
If not then you can still run the program as a user by using "Run As" to enable you to run the program as if you were logged on as an administrator.

Hi Steve

thank you for your tips. I´m always trying to start PI11 as the same user as it was installed by - the admin user. So this can´t be the problem, right? I also followed the instructions you gave in one post (forgotten- was about "Re-installation of Ulead Products") - and: you gess it, PI11 doesn´t start.
-
Hm. PI anounced Problems with Files stored in Folder Fio. As i wrote i can start PI if i rename this folder. Maybe there we have to look at? Maybe i need another Fio-folder (if someone please would send it to me)?
-
Let me tell you that i use PI since Version 5 and i never had any Problems. My last Version was 8SE and i was very happy with PI all the time.

Greetings from Germany,

Thank you very much, Steve.
What i noticed ist, that your Fio-Folder has a size of 2,54 MB.
My Fio-Folder (German Version) has a size of 2,36 MB.

I made use of your Fio-Folder - but - it didn´t help.

And again.......arrrggh!!

I uninstalled the Software.
I decided to download the German Trial-Version. My Idea was, if it works i can probably use my code for it...
But nothing - it crashes while trying to load "u32Ico.fio".

Then i uninstalled it and tried the English Trial-version.
It still doesn´t work. It crashes while loading "u32Ico.fio".
i am just enervated now - it is so frustrating.....a Dilemma.

When reinstalling, did you after uninstallation and before re-installation:
- completely remove PI folder
- completely remove settings folders from your profile and All Users profile
- remove by hand all entries from registry referring to PI

Could you list all applications that appear in system tray after startup?

PI is the most fragile (ie. badly written) commercial application I've ever met.
Proponents say that "something must damage PI settings and files". Strange that only PI's files are influenced. I say PI an example of poor programming and we are victims of Ulead deceitful statements of offering support.

Rename u32Ico.fio to u32Ico.old.

@ Xyzzy2: Yes i did. (i will list my Progs running in tray later...)
@keenart: i did. Does not help.

But...Something unbelievable has happened:

it works
----------
I installed a brandnew Windows XP Prof. System [Edit: with only ONE User] on a very new formatted Harddisk. The first Program i installed then was my german Version PI11.
And....it starts without showing any Errors !!!

Why?
-------
What´s interesting now is:
Why can i install PI11 here and why not on my existing Win XP Home System?
What is the diffenrence between this two Systems (without Home/Prof.)?

That´s what i want
-----------------------
Now i know, that my PI11 is not bad or damaged. Ok. But i have to run PI11 on my Win XP Home Sytem, what is my working System.

Has anyone any Idea?
Thanks

Sounds like you have a Windows XP fault and so you have been troubleshooting the wrong thing.

Try checking Windows Event Log for error messages:

check the windows Event Log:-
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System

You will find a red circle with a white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link also contains some hidden code apertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.

Yes, i found many of the Error hints with this Tool.
Most of them were caused by iedit_.dat / combo.dll / iedit_.exe.
Are these all Files used by PI11? -seems so, doesn´t it?

Here are some example Error messages (German of course)
Fehlgeschlagene Anwendung iedit_.dat, Version 11.0.0.0, fehlgeschlagenes Modul combo.dll, Version 11.0.0.0, Fehleradresse 0x00002b1f.
Fehlgeschlagene Anwendung iedit_.exe, Version 11.0.0.1, fehlgeschlagenes Modul combo.dll, Version 11.0.0.0, Fehleradresse 0x00002b1f.
Fehlgeschlagene Anwendung iedit_.exe, Version 11.0.0.0, fehlgeschlagenes Modul combo.dll, Version 11.0.0.0, Fehleradresse 0x00002b1f.
What does it mean?
------------------------
Well, Steve. I really do not understand the meaning of this messages all. What do i have to do with this Knowledge know?
Can´t see a guideline or a HowTo or somthing like that in there.

User Problem?
-----------------
What i noticed is, that all Error messages don´t belong to a specific user. They all do not belong to any user as well. (In the row "user" is to read: "nicht zutreffend" - what means "not correct / not aplicable" or something like that in english)...
Hm. A few weeks ago i decided to add some different user to my System, so now i have 3: a)Bachelor b)Gamer c)Guido. The user "Guido" now is the former admin-user. Before i did this there was No specific user on the system. Is there any Problem hiding in? (naturally i installed and tried to run PI11 as User "guido".)

There seems to be a problem with using more than one XP user which affects some but not all installations.

If you view this post and scroll down to item 3 "Create a New XP User Account" http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13950
I had a problem where any XP user account other than the one that installed PhotoImpact couldn't open it. I did some tests but couldn't discover why but also found that "Run As" would work. I was a bit busy so left it at that.

I have since had one of the other Forum Members inform me that on his machine he was able to use different XP User accounts. For me this issue is still unresolved but currently low on my list of outstanding tasks which I saw as an intellectual exercise because it isn't actually causing me any problems.

Having said that it is obviously causing you the same/similar problems.
I considered the problem to be a Windows XP Security Permissions setting somewhere that was blocking access to something other than the user that installed PhotoImpact.

Problem solved
------------------
Let me tell you that there is no Problem anymore now, because i solved the (my) Problem. What i did:

I deleted the 2 User a)Bachelor and b)Gamer, so that only the admin-user has been left. And..hey... i even can run the Version i installed before and wich did not work (see above).

So, the only thing that helps is to deactivate all other Windows XP user wich are not the admin one. Means: My PI11 does not run in any way(!) if there are more than the one admin-user on my system.

Conclusion
-------------
As Steve said, it seems to be a big problem with user accounts.
There has to be only one user account for install and to run it correctly without showing any Errors (This was the problem in my case)

Steve,

I think you are right.

Per license agreement, Ulead is installed on a system supposedly for one user. Maybe combo.dll incorrectly thinks it has detected multiple users on a Network.

That's an interesting topic. Could you quote?
So, if there's a PC used by 5 ppl family, it should have 5 copies of PI installed?
Let's don't hide PI hopeless misery behind some seriously crooked ideas.

X.

P.S. PI has problems with multi-user machines at least since PI10.
P.P.S. Not to mention proper user notification of the problem- crash! What a wonderful, ingenious idea, appreciated by so few...
