Smart Compositor Templates - Bad Video File created

Post by BernardD »

Good day,
I have the following problem and I am wondering if other would have the same or if it is just me.

a) I have MSP8 with latest SP1 version 8.10.0039.0
b) I have purchsed the Smart Compositor Templates and I am performing
test using the Template "Documentary : DO02_A"
c) My Computer is a Dual Core 3.0 Ghz (HP Pavillon) with 2Gb RAM
Matrox Parhelia APVe graphic card.

Here is what I am doing in MSP 8:
1) Insert Smart Compositor and select Documentary DO02_A
2) I place it on Video1 Track
3) Then I perform a : File / create / Video File
4) Type Microsoft AVI files - Uncompressed, Lower Field First,
24bits 720x576, 25fps, Interleave audio for every 1 frame,
PCM 48Khz;16bits;stereo
file name : text.avi
5) MSP is creating the file and once finished, the file is playing but like if it
is cutting. Not sure how to explain ... it is not fluid. Jerky somehow.

I have tried the same but with compression using my MainConcept DV Codec 2.4.16 and no problem.

Why am I not getting a good video file when no compression is used ?
Can you replicate this problem ?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks/kind regards,
Bernard

Steve,
I guess you didn't start relaxing for your week-end yet

Indeed, when doing this it is perfect. However, I was always on the impression that it was better to never use compression in order to keep highest quality.

Maybe if I try to answer this Steve can sit back and relax..

In a perfect world you would be correct. However, the problem is more the technology. What I mean is your dual core p4 can render (reasonably quickly) and playback without hiccuping dv type files because the bitrate required is within the ability of the equipment to do so..if memory serves dv is a fixed bitrate of 25 megabits per second.
Next step up is currently HD..requires more horsepower cuz the bitrate may be the same (about 25mbit) but the file used for editing has considerably more pixels for your system to deal with..1080i has a resolution of 1,555,200 pixels, which is 4.5 times larger than the resolution of NTSC-DV (345,600 pixels)
Above that you are looking at your "uncompressed video". To put together a comp that can handle the throughput and also have the storage required to edit a reasonable amount of video at one time would require hardware you just cant find anywhere at this point. And if you did, you probably would rather buy a new Mercedes for the same money.
Heck, a good Digital Beta SX camera alone is about $50k. For our high def stuff we edit in 1080 at my major market tv station.. and that requires dual proc memory pigs that are very pricy.
I think if the average guy wanted to have the computing throughput that us video editors want... then the prices would come down cuz the manufacturors would be banging the stuff out by the thousands.. Until then.. we have stuff available today that makes hardware five years old look like stone age technology. I can't wait to see where we are in five more years.

My two cents worth.

Non-linear editing is half art/half brain damage
