Sorry guys but there is still a problem with creating our own smart compositions. Please download both of the following files but dont do anything with them until you read the rest of this post.
1. http://www.steve-jones.pwp.blueyonder.c ... ircles.zip
2. http://www.steve-jones.pwp.blueyonder.c ... or/fix.zip

Here is a copy of the email I have sent to Ulead which is self explanatory.

I waited for the Service pack to come out in the hope that you would fix the problem which it hasn’t. However I have made further tests and now know where the fault is and the fix.

Firstly I installed service pack 1.

I then opened my original dvp file and from that I created a smart composition with the designer tool – attached – Circles.zip

(The same happens without it being zipped so that is not an issue).

I then re-booted my computer to my alternative operating system and installed service pack 1 to that copy of MSP8.

I opened MediaStudio installed the circles.exe smart composition which failed to work.

I made further tests and discovered that MediaStudio was still looking for a file C:\Circles\circlemask.tif

This was the location of that file at the time of creation.

If this file is placed in that location (attached – fix.zip) MediaStudio now works correctly. The designer tool is not gathering together all of the items that were used to create the composition and is instead still looking for them in their original locations.

I have just had an email from the MSP8 Manager and I have further explained the problem to him which they will look into.

Steve

I must admit that I can't understand the problem. I have made exe files (in Build 0038) of quite complex multiple timeline/tracks project composite with effects of all types. Having sent the exe file to a different computer, alone, I ran the exe file, started VE|SC and, lo and behold, it was there in my new category 'test'. I played it in the SC window, then took it into the timeline and expanded the sub-timelines. Everything was as it ought, no problem, not even a crash!

The files you mention - yours or mine?
If they are yours you will not see the problem because the files that it relies upon are present on your computer in the folders where they are expected to be.

You can use to check this problem and will confirm my findings.

Unzip the file Circles.zip.
Run the file Circles.exe
Unzip the file fix.zip so that you will have this file in this location c:\circles\circlemask.tif
Open MediaStudio and the smart composition will work.
Close MediaStudio.
Rename the folder c:\circles to become c:\circlesx so that you now have a file c:\circlesx\circlemask.tif
Now open MediaStudio. You will see the smart composition in the library but if you now click on it you will get an error “file don’t exists”
Close the smart compositor library – no need to exit from MediaStudio.
Revert the name of the above directory so that we again have c:\circles\circlemask.tif
Open the smart compositor library and it will now work.

Sorry, we are talking at cross-purposes or appear to be. I generated my own exe file in SCD on one computer, sent the folder, and it alone, by network to a hard disk on a second computer, installed it there from the hard disk without any reference to the 1st computer, and it worked perfectly. All the data it needed was compressed into the exe and dvp files in the folder.

I'm wondering whether your problem may not be because you have zipped a file that is already highly compressed.

Have you tried creating a new dvp, from scratch, running it through SCD to create an exe file (actually a folder is created) and installing the folder on a different computer and then running the exe file? If it works, then try zipping the folder and repeating under a different name. ???

Sorry but its nothing to do with making the exe file into a zip.
I just zipped it for others to be able to download.

On my machine the original exe file is quite large (I'm at work now so can't give the exact size) and using that exe file to install still produces the problem.

Its a sort of smart packaging issue.
When you are going to start work on a new project I would think you would probably do as I do, create a seperate folder on the computer so that all the project files for that particular project are kept together in one folder.

In the case of the "circles" project I created a folder c:\circles
In that folder I placed a copy of a tif to act as the circular mask.

Now the smart compositor designer should gather everything used in the project together when creating the exe file so that whoever executes it elsewhere should now get everything associated with the smart composition all contained within one folder
the location is something like
C:\program files\ulead\media Studio 8.0\....
(Bear with me I am at my workplace)

When you run the exe file those files are indeed located there - but
MediaStudio is still looking for them in their original locations - in my case
c:\circles\

This is why I describe the problem as MediaStudio cannot "See" the files.
It is a re-linking problem.

This is why I think we are at cross-purposes: in my case, it found everything without having to look for it elsewhere. I agree that there was a problem, but it does not exist for me since build 0038 (perhaps even earlier). Unfortunately, the folder I used for my test is too big for convenient up/downloading (which is a major limitation of SC, IMO), being nearly 8 times larger than SP1 (!).

Now, I presume your "missing" file may have an alpha layer as a matte. I have not done anything specifically with alpha layers in a tif file, or even a more appropriate tga file. The only image formats I used in my tests were jpg, so I can't say whether there is something which prevents such a file from being "sucked into" the exe file. However, a number of the clips in my test do use overlays. What flummoxes me a little is that your "fix" folder has to contain the tif file separately. In my tests, after running the Designer, I have only two files in the folder, the exe and the dvp. Judging from the size, the exe file wraps all the other files into it.

I think we need to see what Ulead do in response to my email.
The tif file does get "sucked in" and appears where it ought to, its just that it isn't re-linked and still looks for it in its original location.

Regarding the large file sizes.
This is due to the use of videos which are large and audio which is also large. By using simple colour blocks and 'automusic' (They are only placeholders) the file size is greatly reduced.
Then if you zip the exe file created by the designer tool it shrinks to next to nothing and can be shared via the internet.

I did some tests - with smart compositions that only relied on stuff in the samples library (So obviously they will work because everyone has them and in that particular location) and found that zip/unzip had no adverse effect.

Be nice if this one gets sorted out because being able to share these amongst ourselves would really enhance this product and make it streets ahead of the competition (as if it wasn't already!)

Sorry, not so! I don't allow any data or application files I can avoid into C:. My "My documents" chain is in F: and all Ulead stuff is in D: including the samples. It is therefore not realistic to assume everyone uses a default installation. That should make no difference, as the SC files can be generated from any partition: the exe finds the correct installation place, no matter what.

You've probably just solved a long standing mystery without realising it!
Smart Compositor - Heres 6 more

Some users were able to install those 6 OK whilst some others reported problems. Perhaps those with problems had not installed MSP8 to the default location on the C drive.

SP1 will not install on the trial version nor on pre-release versions, Can you please confirm that you have a full version and the build no. (Help|About and copy the first # which should appear like 8.00.00nn.0, where nn is the build).

If you have a full release version, then I believe this is unusual. Can you please give full details of exactly what happens and when?

I have full version 8.00.0028

After downloading, I installed SP1, as it started to install it stopped, and a error message appears:

Component:Target
file group: Target all
File: C\prog\uleadd sys\Msp8pro8.0\aft_plug\quantize.aft
Error: there are no files

I have tried this 3 times .
I also downloaded it 3 times to different folders.
Each time after locking up MSP, I have to uninstall MSP and reinstall.
Help...Thanks
Hank
