V10 Craches while trying to render a .avi file

Post by WDK »

Nature of the Problem: While trying to render a .avi file using "Create Video File", V10+ crashes after the task is 99% complete. It creates a file ( in this case just over 1G in size) but when I try to open the created file, it causes Windows explorer to crash. The only way that I have been able to delete it is to first select another file, then select the file created by the "Create Video File" before it crashed, and then delete both files. I have tried to create the .avi file on both the C: drive and an external hard drive. Both drives have considerable space available (80G or more).

Properties of the source file: Ulead VideoStudio 10.0 Document created in the Edit mode.

Project Settings: Share - Create Video File - NTSC DV(16:9)

Output Format: .avi file to record back to Sony HDR-HC3 camcorder

NTSC

No VideoStudio error codes

A (relatively) common problem in VS 8 and VS 9 and it would appear still present in VS 10.

Have a read of

You can also search the forum for similar complaints and possible solutions from others. But the technique documented here has always worked for me - it can be a bit labourious though :-)

I will start this by saying I don't have a HD camera, and have never tried playing around with that format. I am also hoping that someone like John Hunter will intervene and give some more helpful advice.

But in the meantime, correct me if I am wrong, but your camera uses HDV and mpeg-2 format. If I am correct, then we need to know more about the properties of the video you are trying to produce into a file for sending back to your camera. I assume you captured from the camera, and have edited it, but now want to send it back to the camera in the edited form but in the same format -- can you confirm this, please? But what were the original capture properties? In VS, right click on one of your captured files, copy down its properties, and post them here... And then can you tell us the exact properties of the file you are trying to produce, how you chose it within Video Studio, and exactly what editing you did and the other steps you took to produce the final video?

Rendering problems to build avi file to record back to HC3

Post by WDK »

Thanks for the reply Ken.

I down loaded the camera in HD mode and VideoStudio appeared to capture in MPEG2. I did my editing and saved "video clips" (I assume those are in MPEG format) and added some photos built in photo shop elements. I added some music and some titles using video studio and made a project that was saved in the vsp format.

The Video Studio techs instructed me to clear all the non-necessary files from my computer, disconnect everything, reload VS10+. etc but that didn't work - same problem. Even tried a different computer - identical problem.

I finally decided to build a smaller project to see if there might be a bug in the original. I was able to render it as a .avi file - success. Then I tried to send it back to the same HC3 using the same computer it was capture on. No luck. I get the message "Failed to get the correct device driver". In the Create Video File option, I used "NTSC DV(16:9), NTCS DV (4:3) and used "Make Movie Manager" to build a custom rendering with settings of DV Video Endoder - type 2, and avi. Got the same message "Failed to get the correct device driver" no matter what rendering I tried. I checked (and my wife cross-checked the video camera settings and we plugged and unplugged the cable several times.

Any ideas?

I sure am disappointed with theUlead documentation but I am sure glad there is a users group that can help newcommers like me. I think the Ulead manual that came with the software was also sold to different countries for use as eye testing for potential military fighter pilots. The manual should come with a large magnifiying glass.

Thanks again

Typical response from tech support - a bit like problems with Microsoft Windows - just reboot and all will be forgiven! :-)

Bill,

The fact that you were able to successfully render a smaller video file confirms (in my opinion :-)) that you need to follow the troubleshooting procedure that I refered to in my first response - that is so you can successfully render your original project. This later problem you mention appears to be a separate and unrelated issue to the first one.
