Which process is accessing my harddisk

Post by marie »

On a second computer on my LAN (unused by anyone else), I've used in the past for USV output, its 60G SCSI harddisk is continuously being furiously accessed every 3..7 minutes I can hear its loud (write/read/scan) even though it is sitting in another room. It seems as if its spindle/heads are going to fly out during this routine and the the system becomes almost unusable, then it's total silence like after a storm. Then the whole thing repeats. Someone out there is after destroying/melting my harddisk :(

1) Turned off indexing on its C: only drive/partition, it must have been a default

2) I've run anti-virus (McAffee 9)

3) Killed most processes including some svchost.exe :) (probably not enough I can't see/tell the culprit process, DLL, drivers,... that is behind this nonsense activity.

4) Installed Diskeeper8 and cleaned it's defrag several times including boottime. No avail this 30..60 seconds HD stress routine is driving me crazy as if there is a daemon in this PC.

I am aware of a couple articles in these forums about:
1. configuring swapfile (permanent and semi.)
2. making alternate hardware profile

I am not at a point of trying either of these (yet)

5) Windows Perfmon only shows "Avg Disk Queue Length" peaking at 100% during this harddisk trashing activity. I am not sure I am looking at the right thing with Perfmon and how to pinpoint which process is behind this. Perhaps you can point me to better tools to uncover which processes are behind this HD activity?

Related to Searching these forums I observed the following:
1) When I backup the search-results from reading a post I get the following until I refresh.
Warning: Page has Expired
This does not on the 2nd, 3rd... Search-results pages
2) Can I search only on the subject line? Although many poster don't have descriptive subjects :)

Thank you for any help and all the great tutorial articles being authored here.

Hi Marie,

As this is not a Video Studio issue, I would send a pm to sjj1805 or one of the moderators regarding your issue.

1. When choosing one of the search results, hold the Shift key when you click. That opens the search result in a new window. When you are done reading that one, simply close the window and you are back at the search results.

2. Under the Search Options you can choose to search topic title and message text or message text only.

There are dozens of reasons why the hard drive light can be seen flickering away and the noise of the drive heads chattering.

Click this link for some possible reasons.
