split video to back up
I have video that I want to back up to a DVD and erase from my harddrive. One video is about 12 GB. Is there an easy way to split this to fit on 3 DVDs or do I need to split them and then re-encode them? I'm planning on doing it in video studio unless there is another way to just split the file in 3 parts and copy to DVD. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

yeah sorry, should have given more detail. It is a DV-AVI file. It was the wedding project I've been working on and is now complete. The two files (wedding and reception) are both over 10 GB. They were originally from movie maker. I brought one into video studio and re-encoded it. Now, I just want to split them up into 4 GB chuncks to burn to DVD. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi
The title of the post indicates that you want to back-up the file, (save as a data file) or do you want to create a dvd?
If you want to create a Dvd then you have to re-code the video to an Mpeg format. Then use the Mpeg to burn a Dvd.
Providing the Video is DV-Avi then it will be about 13 Gb per hour.
You re-code this to Mpeg (Share Create Video File) selecting Pal DVD or Ntsc DVD
This will recode the video to Video Studio default settings that will fit to disc.
So where are you in the world Pal or Ntsc
The resultant video file being Mpeg 2 at about 4.3 Gb
Now start a new project using this video in Share Create Disc—Add Video
Make sure your project properties match the video properties.
Read the recommended procedure at the top of this forum.
Also My quick Guide to Dv-Avi from the link below
Hope this helps

I've created the DVD from the videos... now I'm just trying to back up the original video files to DVD (in case I want to do any further editing later.) so I intended to back them up as AVI files, so I'm just looking for a simple way to split a 12 GB AVI file into three 4 GB parts to fit on 3 DVDs. I would prefer to do this without the long process of re-encoding. Is there a way in video studio or another program I can use to just say "split this file into 3 equal parts to fit on DVDs?" That's what I'm looking for. Thanks for the input from everyone so far.

Hi
If you need to split the video then you have to render the video again.
Using the scissors cut the video clip into three.
Drag the clips to the library to create a thumbnail copy.
Using one clip in the timeline Share Create Video File – Same as First Clip
Rendering should be relatively quick
Repeat with the other two clips.

oh sorry, we must have both posted at almost the same time. I didn't even see your post about trasfering back to the DV camera. Unfortunately, my camera is not a DV camera, it uses high 8 tapes, but has all the features of digital, so yes, to answer the question, I will be splitting the video in VS10 and transfering to DVD. Thanks for the help.
