Can't capture from Sony HDR-HC1, hangs at Change Field Order
>SUBJECT
Can't capture from my Sony HDV-HC1, followed recommended procedure best I could, hangs before I even press the capture button, on "Change Field Order" screen.
I'm a newbie to both video editing and this program, but I did try to follow all the directions posted for HDV and the Read Me First articles. I apologize in advance if this is something really stupid that I just didn't find in the other posts.
Anyway, I think I need advice about plug-ins? If I change it to the Ulead HDV plug in, the video will capture (though not using upper field first whatever that means), but the sound doesn't sync. What plug in am I supposed to use, and am I supposed to change options anywhere else aside from those mentioned on the Preferences screen?
As a second question, maybe this just isn't the right program for me? It looks like a person needs to devote a lot of time to getting this just right, and I'm a mom of a 3 year old who doesn't nap and I don't have tons of time. Is there a more idiot-proof program I can use that can handle my camera? I don't need a lot of frills, all I want to do is have high-quality video, and be able to edit out all my bad shots and put music over the areas where people said things they shouldn't have... Any advice would be appreciated.
>Properties of your source files:
Not sure what you mean by this. I have tapes in my Sony HDR-HC1. They haven't been successfully captured yet.
>What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:
Sony HDR-HC1 connected with Firewire. Using V10+ Video Studio installed from the download not the CD.
>Project Settings:
same as in HD post - the ones I could change.
>Output format: haven't got that far, will be NTSC.
PAL or NTSC
>Error Codes (if any): none, it just freezes.
>System information: Windows Media Center PC, 2 gigs RAM, 2 hard drives, windows XP sp2, not sure what else you need to know.
I am so frustrated I'm ready to throw the computer out the window. Please help before I cry again... Jennifer

You shure took a big leap into video editing. Using a High Definition Camera to do video. This type of video puts very high demands on your computer, and the user.
It sounds like you are capturing video properly, don't try to change the field order, it should be Upper Field First. As for the sync problem it is probably caused by the computer lagging behind. Once the file is edited and you create a output file the strange occurences usually disappear.
You don't need any other plug-ins for HD Video.
You do need to devote a little time to learn the program.
Check this out if you haven't already:

I suggest you download the Try Before You By version of Movie Factory 5
and use it to do your Video, you might find it easier to use.

I can't do upper field first or it hangs.
Thank you. I will try the other program, and/or a better computer. I've been taking video for years, but it has just been piling up. Right before Christmas I finally had time to try to edit it, and it all looked like hell (I had been using a very old JVC camera). I thought I was investing in a good camera to get rid of this problem, but I seem to have caused more problems by getting something bleeding-edge? (That said, the video that I did capture using the wrong settings looked beautiful, the sound just didn't sync.)
If I leave the field order set to upper field first, then I can't press the button to even attempt to capture the video. It hangs right after you press the capture video button. The "Change Field Order" screen appears, goes to about 50% and then nothing happens. If anybody knows a workaround for this it would be appreciated.
Thanks again for the help and the program recommendation, will check that out now and see if it does HD.

Check the following post, the third entry about camera settings.

This might not help but is a suggestion to ensure your camera is setup to output HD video to the PC.

Jennifer,
If your video looks like Hell, you probably are using the wrong video properties. Don't get further confused by trying another editor.
If you have Video Studio 10+, see the following HD Tutorial for step-by-step capturing and editing high definition video from the Sony HDR-HC1 - http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13872
If you have Video Studio 9, see the following HD Tutorial - http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=9854
BTW, Do not try change the field order: Upper Field First is correct. BTW, how did you open this "Change Field Order" screen?? What version of Video Studio are you using? What are your computer specs? Please fill out your forum member profile.

Thank you, please let me clarify hell...
Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time, and I apologize for not properly filling out my system info before, I think I did it correctly now, please let me know if I didn't.
When I say my old DV files looked like HELL, what I meant was that there wasn't very much detail, everything was washed out, there was lots of pixelation and general blurriness. I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was a problem with my video editing software. I never actually got to the editing stage, it was upon review of the captured footage that I realized I din't like the quality I was getting.
The bad quality was entirely my fault. I'm a mom, taking video under poor lighting conditions in the house, whenever my kids do something their grandparents would like to see. I researched for a camera that did well under this situation and that's how I ended up with the Sony HDR-HC1
As for how did I open the Change Field Order screen, I didn't purposely do it. This screen pops up automatically as soon as I press the Capture Video button on the Capture tab. The only way I can make this scree not appear restart the computer, change the preferences to one of th eother two field order settings and then capture the video. But again, I don't know if that is a good plan, and the video that captures doesn't quite sync with the audio. You can't cancel out of the Change Field Order screen.
What is really odd, is that my husband was able to capture video one time. He is not an instruction-reader type person, and didn't read anything and just plugged it in and changed the capture plug in to HDV and captured it. His audio synced fine. Since I had read the boards carefully (I am an instruction-reader) I was concerned that any projects I made with this captured video wouldn't work since he didn't change any of the preferences etc. So I deleted it, and went through the tutorials for setting up the software preferences, copying the version 9 things that were missing from version 10 etc. before trying to capture. The only instructions that I did not complete were those involving changing the system registry because I was afraid to cause any serious problems. Maybe if nobody else is having this problem I should just uninstall and reinstall?
Sorry for long-windedness... Jennifer

Terry,
Jennifer said that she followed the RP but I did not get the sense that she followed the HD tutorial. I just tried again to get 10+ to present a Change Field Order screen in the capture module - I can't do it...
Jennifer,
You said "The only instructions that I did not complete were those involving changing the system registry". IMO, manually changing the registry is a bit like juggling hand grenades.
I'm glad you did not do it.
I can only say that, from time to time, I have seen the craziest messages from Video Studio - mainly after a crash - when the .ini files sometimes get scrambled and inconsistent with each other. Much as I hate to give this advise, I think that you should try reinstalling VS10+ - but only after uninstalling it and then manually deleting all other traces of "Ulead Video Studio\10.0" folders.
BTW, your camera technique should not cause pixelation - but wrong properties can.
Your computer is powerful enough to edit HD with 10+ - assuming that there is plenty of unfragmented disk space available.
You should not need any plugins with 10+ for HD video. However, I had problems, initially, with 10+ when capturing from the HC1 because of an installation conflict with an analog capture box that I used with earlier versions of VS. If you have special capture dlls in your version 9 installation, it seems that 10+ may, erroneously, try to install them in 10+... I renamed the troublesome dlls (in 9.0) and was able to capture from the HC1 after reinstalling it.
You also should not have to copy anything from version 9 that seems to be "missing from version 10".
Are your video card drivers up to date?
BTW, you are not using the Movie Wizard, are you?
EDIT: Just noticed your double post (please don't) that said you downloaded 10+. This is another potential source of error because the VS10+ is so huge that there is a significant possiblity that your download could contain an undetected transmission error. If the above steps don't work, then buy the boxed version with the CD. This is what I use.

I figured it out!!!!!
Thank you to everyone for your help. I had just tried to capture using the try before you buy version of Movie Factory and it wouldn't recognize my video camera as being connected. On a hunch, I tried a different cable, and everything seems to work fine. I just finished capturing and there was no change field order screen and the audio seems to sync. I should have thought of this earlier, but since it did find the camera, and since my cable was brand new I didn't suspect.
Sorry about the double post, this is my first posting experience and I goofed up. Thanks for being nice about it, I deserved yelling.
I hope to continue with the tutorials tomorrow, now that I've managed to capture something!
Thanks!

Congratulations, most folks wouldn't think to check the cable. What side tracked me is you stateted yor husband was able to capture video with the setup you had (cable, computer and camera).
On the lighting note you might be wise to invest in a video light, due to the fact that the HC1 doesn't have very good low light performance.
Thanks for letting us know how you solved your problem.

Husband's Capture...
Yeah, my husband being able to capture the first time confuses me as well. And I know he didn't use a different cable, since the only other one we had was still in the indestructible-death-defying plastic packaging. He is a computer god, and generally all he has to do is come into the room for things to start working...
Thanks again for helping. I never would have figured it out if I hadn't dowloaded Movie Factory and seen that it didn't recognize my camera's existence.
-Jennifer
P.S. Is there any way I can kill my stupid double post?

Jennifer,
I'm glad that you have identified the problem. The cable probably has an intermittent connection, which would explain how your husband was able to capture.
However, that "Change Field Order" response to a defective firewire cable is one of the most dysfunctional error messages that I have ever heard of.
