I am having performance problems trying to edit MPEG4 files. In clip mode they preview fine OK. However in project mode they are very very jerky (1 frame/sec) in the preview window. Are there any settings I can change to improve the performance of editing MPEG4 files?
Note: I am using Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus.

I am not aware of any specific settings you need to change. (I am assuming you have the full version of VS10+, and not the trial -- I do not know of any mpeg-4 limitations in the trial version apart from not having Dolby, but wouldn't be surprised if they were there).
I have not really done extensive work myself with mpeg-4 in VS before (and I now have VS10+ too). But just the other day, someone gave me some .mov video files (which are mpeg-4) from a still camera which they were having trouble with in VS10. If you press the System button below this message, you will see my computer set-up. But essentially, I had no problem in doing the following with these files: converting from their native NTSC to PAL; joining them together with transitions and outputting them to another mpeg-4 file and also to a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file. Playback was excellent in both Clip and Project mode, both in the original and converted clips, and in the joined output files. So it can be done. However, I know nothing about your computer set-up so cannot comment beyond this.
That being said, however, I assume you are aware that being in highly compressed format, these files are really not made for extensive editing. People already have trouble editing mpeg-2 files, and mpeg-4s are of course even more compressed than that.

MPEG-4 editting
Thank you for the reply. I can confirm the following:
- I do have the latest Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus Full edition (not trial)
- My original video clips from the digital camera are 29.97 frames/sec, 485kbps approx, Mpeg4s Decoder DMO compersion, 24 bits, 640x480 (Audio is Compression IMA ADPCM 44.1kHz, 4 bit, Mono)
- My original clips play smoothly in Clip mode
- My original clips do NOT play smoothly in Project mode
- I cannot convert the clips to MPEG4 (ie re-encode) without total loss of quality
- I can convert the clips to MPEG Media Type PAL DVD at 25 frames/sec
- I can convert the clips to MPEG Media Type MPEG-2 at 29.97 frames/sec.
- The converted clips do double the size and there is some loss of quality.
- The converted clips play fairly smoothly in Clip mode
- Importantly, the converted clips play fairly smoothly in Project mode
Therefore I am saying your suggestions help in that if I convert my original MPEG files, then Project mode becomes a lot smoother. However there does appear to be a slight trade-off in quality. I will keep experimenting with different settings.
