DL burn failed at layer change

Post by willydeluxe »

I have a Pioneer DV (heck, can't remember the rest but it IS a DL burner) 108 flashed to 1.20.
Tried my first burn, a compilation of VS9-made mpegs, and at 58 or 59% of the burn got these messages: " The target device might have some problems. Please try again or reboot (5209)" and "uDVD Burn Mgr.dll get Burning engine RC string fail. Report ID: 5209 Error (ox80041459) DVD+R - SPTI-2A-02-03-73-03".
The disc was partially burned correctly: all the menu pages and all the thumbnails, but from clip 'x' on they wouldn't play - "The disc is dirty". When I deconstructed the compilation I saw that clip 'x' starts a fraction before the layer change mark.
If you need to know more tech details please tell me what, and where to find it.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I have the 5in1 installed, but I certainly don't have the second one.
How can I check if I actually do have the 5in1 installed?

So you think this is not a problem with the drive itself, but a problem of communication between VS9 and the drive?

I'm rather reluctant to try the burn again until I know for sure I have the problem sorted - the price of discs being what they are in Europe. They must be SO cheap where you are, lucky you.

Thanks.

First, I think you need to re-install VS 9 because of the "get RC string failed" message. Usually it shows when your program installation is corrupted.

Second, I remember the second update pack includes a fix for layer break issue. Maybe you can try it.

I suggest you burn to a disk image file first to verify if it's a software, hardware or disc problem. If the disk image file can be burned successfully but you still cannot burn to disc, then it's possible a compatibility problem with the disc.

Hope this helps.

Re-installed, fully patched.
The same project successfully burned disc image but failed again at layer change when burning to disc.

As you suggested that the problem might be a disc-related issue I shall try a Traxdata disc - the only ones sold singly that I can find here at present.

If this too fails then we're looking at a hardware problem, right?

This prompted me to do a search to see if they exist yet which it appears they do but cannot get into the individual sites as they are blocked by my workplace firewall.
Dual layer re-writeable DVD discs.
might be worth getting one or two

Update:
When buying a fresh disc 'the man in the shop' told me to check whether my IDE cable was the 33- or 66-thread type, saying that the 66 allows more reliable data transfer.
Sure enough I had the 33 and changed it, and burned to a Traxdata disc. VS9 said 'succesfull burn'. Yippee!

On my Sony 710 I can play 13 out of the 16 clips, and at 13 it's a long way past the layer change. On clips 14 -16 it takes a long time before anything happens then it finally says 'the disc is dirty'.
In my pc WMedia Player hangs if I tell it to play clip 14 onwards
VLC player plays everything - but VLC always plays everything 'cos it's magic.

The total disc size is 7.44. The last clip in the compilation shows yellow but is still short of the red dotted marker.

This is beginning to look like a disc problem, right?

(Thanks Steve for the RW tip: I had no idea they were available.)

I have just tried to burn from the disc image file using ImgBurn and got this message:
'Optimal L1 Data Zone Start LBA: None found (VTS_01).
This image has not been mastered correctly for burning onto a double layer (OTP Track Path) disc. None of the cells meet the 'DVD-Video specification' criteria for a potential layer break position'.

What have I done/what is going wrong?

I am a bit reluctant bumping this back up, but I'm really surprised that none of the wise and helpful people here have offered an answer to this continuing saga.

To resume:
1/ I have burnt a DL on VS9:
it plays on my pc using two freeware progs, VLC player and Zoom player, but WMediaPlayer hangs some time after the layer change:
on my Sony 710 it hangs around the same point as on WMediaPlayer, and says 'Disc is dirty'.
2/ I made a Disc Image of the project: ImgBurn says it is 'not properly formatted for a layer change'.
I've wasted 3 discs getting this far.

Sorry for my impatience/impertinence.

I think we may be looking in the wrong place and being misled by the fact it is a dual layer disc. Had this same error occured on a single layer disc I am sure someone would have suggested lowering your burning speeds.

I have a 16x DVD burner and use 8x discs, however I never burn above 4x because anything higher than that creates discs that in some players will play OK, others play with problems and in some will not even play at all.

That's also what I can suggest.

To ease the pain on disk compatibility, use lower burning speed would be better. If this still does not help then contact Ulead Tech Support.

Both brands of disc have been burnt at 2.4x which is their stated speed, which is also the lowest speed offered to me in the dropdown box - it doesn't offer me x1.

However, point 2 in my above post would not be explained by a disc incompatability.
I'm wondering if there is not a larger problem somewhere: or else why would VS9 create an improperly formatted disc image?

I shall contact Tech Support but to be honest I don't expect much: if you guys can't figure it out then who can?

Successfully burned fully readable DVD onto a 'Platinum' disc: don't know who makes them but they're 8€ each rather than the 5.5€ ones I'd been trying before.
Let's hope this is the end of this thread!

Thanks for the help.
