Data Error - Help!

Post by bhumeny »

I have a wedding video recorded on a mini dvd that I am unable to copy or import into ulead videostudio. I get a data error (CRC). This happens in windows as well. I can see the entire video on a DVD player oir using MS Windows Media Player.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can recover from the error or at least recover the undamaged portions? I no longer have access to the camcorder.
Thanks.

Mate, that sucks.

CRC Error - so I assume that VS won't even attempt to give you access to parts of the DVD? It is sort of stated in your message.

It's interesting that Windows Media Player will play it.

Until somebody steps forward with a better suggestion, I would suggest that you find a DVD Player that provides some form of output signal and record from that.

Another possibility is if you have access to a DVD Recorder that contains a hard drive (e.g. I have a Panasonic DMR-E85H) - you should be able to transfer the DVD contents to the hard drive and then back onto a blank DVD - this should get around the CRC error i.e. the new DVD won't have CRC errors and VS should be able to import the video.

The later suggestion is probably the more likely one to be successful - there is a plethora of DVD Recorders with hard drives these days. Perhaps you know a salesman somewhere who would be happy for you to do an instore "test" of his gear this way? :-)

Excellent link Steve, mate, what are you doing in your spare time

Your input here must be very time consuming and, I trust I speak for all, is an invaluable source of information.

Thanks for all the effort, it's much appreciated.

Since I first posted, I have tried the DVD on several diffferent PC's, all with the same results. There is definitely a problem with the DVD and not with the drive etc..

Thanks to everyone for your input/suggestions.
I will try CRC Checker and the CDCheck software and see how I make out.
Failing that, I will try and connect a DVD player to my PC and try and capture the video from there.

I read Steve's link and saw that your problem can be caused by a dirty or damaged disk. I had a damaged disk (scratch) that would not play in any player (I don't remember if I got a CRC error). I tried cleaning and polishing it, to no avail. I found CD/DVD Repair Pro. It took several cleanings, but I finally got it to work and was able to make a copy.

Given that it's a mini DVD here's another two possibilities if all of the above fail.
1. Do a google for "isobuster" and download. It's a freebie and may be able to write an iso file to your hard drive of the damaged disc. Then by using that iso (image) file you can burn a DVD and import from that OR
2. if you have a Nero suite you may have a utility called Nero Recode. For whatever reason this program is VERY forgiving of damaged/unfinalised discs, I have no idea why. Use it to copy the contents of the disc to your hard drive. By default it will create a folder called "recode." When it has done its stuff just rename the folder to VIDEO_TS and then use VS to import.

Finally Got past the CRC Error

I tried the adv. settings for DVD Decrypter from the following note:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/124000
and it was able to bypass the bad sectors. It took about about 12 hours, but I got a file that I was then able to import and edit using Ulead Videostudio.

Thanks to evceryone for their suggestions/help.
