Linking Manual to F1(Help)

Post by GerryG »

I am using the trial version of VideoStudio ver10. It's a slightly steep learning curve for me as its my first camcorder and consequently my first stab at video editing. When I click on the ?(UleadVideoStudio Help F1) I get the message "can't find the help file". Now I downloaded the manual from Ulead's website but its not exactly ideal to have to come out of the app to read the manual with Acrobat Reader and then go back in. Is there any way I can link the manual to F1.

Hi Gerry, welcome to the forums, and the wonderful world of video editing..:)

Try searching for a vstudio.chm file in the Ulead Video Studio/Video Studio 10 folder. This is the help file. I don't recall if the trial version includes this file. If it is there, that is what you would link to.

Thanks for the warm welcome Ron. It would appear the help file is a not a feature of the trial version, however I do have the manual in PDF format which is certaintly better than not having anything. I will more than likely be upgrading to the full version in any case. Futhermore having browsed this forum its certaintly packed with very useful tutorials.

Cheers,

Gerry.

Glad to help Gerry..:)

FWIW, I'm just using the Beta version while waiting on my VS10+ to arrive. I had forgot that Ulead didn't have the Help file done at the time. So it too does not have one... :o

Good luck..:)

The VS manual sucks in terms of being an introduction to either Video Editing or Video Studio itself. The product keeps getting new features from one release to the next but the manual doesn't change significantly - in fact, the manual for VS 10 is actually smaller than its predecessor! (191 pages versus 218 pages for VS 9).

You would think that ULead would hire a decent technical writer and get the product documented properly - it is aimed at the base level/introductory market and as such should be written accordingly. Instead it is written more for somebody who already understands many of the concepts of video editting and for users of previous versions of VS (at least this was my experience when I joined the VS bandwagon back at VS 8 :-)). I wouldn't necessarily expect a complete beginners guide but ULead should certainly be kinder to its customer base (and potential customer base) by providing a gentler introduction to using their product than the current one!

You might want to look at Charlie Hill's Getting Results series. He has done one for VS 8 and VS 9 but is apparently burnt out (for the moment :-)) after doing getting one out for MSP 8, so a book for VS 10 doesn't look to be on the horizon anytime soon. But I can certainly recommend his Getting Results for Video Studio 9 - it provides some excellent introductory material on video editing and using VS.

Have a look at
http://www.getting-results.com/

Hope this helps,
Peter

It will not compete with Charlie Hills excellent book but I am working on this:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13421

The first part is done - getting the material from the camcorder into the computer. Everyone is free to chip in and provide more material for the Tutorials Section and I will include cross references where applicable.

In fact I can only describe the method of obtaining footage from a "mini DV camcorder" and also an "analogue camcorder via TV card" because they are what I own/owned.

JC Hunter has included a tutorial on HD Camcoders so if anyone would like to contribute a short tutorial concerning how to capture from other types of camcorder it would greatly assist our members.

I cannot guarantee any form of reward but Ulead have indicated in this post
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=11365 that gifts will be made for good tutorials that catch their attention.

I have what I thought was a simple problem. Could someone direct me to the manual. I have this software on a 30 day trial basis and if I can trim a picture and do a dissolve, I'll buy it.

I am doing a simple slide show to music. I have the images ready to go but being a proffessional film editor, I find the 'timeline' confusing. I'm used to checkerboarding two vision tracks and using any overlap for dissolves and fades. I found the effects I need in the clip menu but they are greyed out even when I have the shot selected. (What is ripple editing? Does that play a part?) How do I play with the length of shots without having to delete all shots after the shot I've selected to manipulate?

How to use this software in conjunction with DVD's, Camcorders and other equipment will certainly be something I'll persue but only if I can easily fade up from black, manipulate the timing of that fade-up and then dissolve into the next shot. This very basic manipulation of images on the timeline is the entry point for all new users of this software. Its viability depends on it and I can't find it.

Just quickly, to fade up at the beginning insert a black color block into the start of the timeline then apply the crossfade effect so that you are getting a crossfade from black to your first image. The dissolve you are looking for is really just the crossfade transition.
Before you insert your images go to the preferences and set the default duration for the images as well as a default transition if you want.
Ripple editing allows you to insert things on to the timeline without pushing all your other assests out of alignement.
