Mono/Stereo help please

Post by Calver »

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this and using VS8. My initial aim is to archive my old home video camera tapes to DVD. The camera I'm connecting to my capture device (DVD Express) has only one audio phono (white), but the capture doesn't allow me to change from stereo to mono.

The resulting mpeg2 file only plays through the left speaker when dropped into the timeline. If I change the Project Properties/Compression to 'Mono' it plays through both speakers. However, it still only shows on the left dB scale.

Is this all I need to do to get the sound from both channels on the final DVD?

Will it be any different if I buy a phono splitter cable and record both channels in the first place?

I'm a little confused because other posts talk about creating new files with 'Joint stereo' set, or splitting the audio part and modifying it that way.

Your guidance will be appreciated!

If you can't change the capture settings to mono go to your local electronics store and purchase Mono to stereo adapter. It's the easiest and best solution.

Yes the best option is to get a phono splitter adapter/cable - the resulting capture will not be 'stereo' of course but it will be balanced mono coming out of both speakers

Many thanks to both of you for your help. I thought that might be the case!
